Kerala in Bloom"

At BVIEER our pookalam brings together the land of Onam and the life it shelters. At the heart lies the map of Kerala.

Rising above it is the Great Hornbill, Kerala's state bird, worked in white and gold chrysanthemums: a keystone of the rainforest canopy and the great disperser of its seeds. The female hornbill seals herself inside a hollow tree to raise her young, trusting the forest to hold her — the oldest image we have of a mother making a home, and of Onam's own promise of homecoming. Beside her rests the Malabar Banded Peacock, the state butterfly, endemic to the Ghats and a delicate indicator of forest health.

The concentric rings of marigold, rose and chrysanthemum echo the traditional form of the athappookalam, while the imagery carries a quiet message: Onam's harvest and abundance rest on the biodiversity we choose to protect.

Learning, sharing, inspiring. 🌿

Our final-year M.Sc. Wildlife Conservation Action students recently returned to campus before formally completing their course.

Drawing on their internship experiences, they interacted with juniors and super-juniors, sharing insights from the field and discussing the challenges and opportunities in conservation.

Insightful Interaction with CPCB Regional Director at BVIEER 🌿
The Institute of Environment Education and Research (BVIEER), Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pune, was pleased to welcome Shri Pratik Bharne, Regional Director, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Regional Directorate, Pune.
During his visit on 20 August 2026, Shri Bharne interacted with faculty members and students, sharing valuable insights from his experience in environmental governance, pollution control, and regulatory practices. He also visited the BVIEER campus and appreciated the academic and environmental initiatives undertaken by the Institute.
Such interactions provide students with an important opportunity to connect classroom learning with the practical realities of environmental regulation and professional practice.
We sincerely thank Shri Pratik Bharne for his valuable time, guidance, and interaction with the BVIEER community.

Mapping the Repair & Reuse Economy | Pune

♻️ Before "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" became a slogan, India was already repairing.
Tailors, raffu artisans, cobblers, bicycle mechanics, umbrella repairers and countless neighbourhood repair shops have long been the backbone of India's circular economy.
Students of Dr Kalmadi Shamarao High School, Ganeshnagar, Pune mapped these hidden sustainability champions around their school, showing how repair and reuse continue to reduce waste and support local livelihoods.

The Joint International Master of Environmental Sustainability Summer School brought together students from Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Institute of Environment Education and Research, Pune, and their counterparts from the University of Cologne, marking the start to their joint interactions during the semester. The experiences encouraged them to observe, question, collaborate, and reflect on environmental sustainability in new ways. From classroom discussions to hands-on experiences, group assignments and conversations, the summer school became more than an academic program—it became a journey of learning, reflection, and connection.
And the most meaningful part? Hearing the students reflect on what they learned, what challenged them, and what they will carry forward.

What happens when young minds mentor younger minds?

At BVIEER, learning doesn't stop at the classroom door.

Our MSc students became mentors, working alongside school students as they explored real local issues through spatial thinking and geospatial projects.

They guided, questioned and encouraged. The school students investigated, mapped and told their own stories.

And together, they took those stories to the global stage at BRICS 2026..
