Lancaster University has announced plans to open a branch campus in Bengaluru. They join Southampton (already operational), York, Bristol, Liverpool, Aberdeen, Queen's Belfast, Coventry, and Surrey — making the UK the country with the largest higher education footprint in India.
As an overseas education counsellor, here's what I think this really means:
✅ More choices, not fewer
This is not a threat to studying abroad — it's an expansion of options. Students who dreamed of a UK degree but couldn't manage the cost of living in Britain now have a genuine pathway. A Lancaster degree, earned in Bengaluru, is still a Lancaster degree.
✅ The 'stay vs. go' conversation is getting more nuanced
For families where safety, finances, or career plans keep students closer to home, branch campuses offer real value. But for students who want the full international experience — cultural immersion, global networks, work opportunities — going abroad still has irreplaceable advantages.
✅ Initial programmes matter
Lancaster's Bengaluru campus will start with business, management, and computing. These are high-demand fields. Students in these disciplines should watch this space closely.
✅ Quality assurance is key
The UGC has approved Lancaster's Letter of Intent, which is a good sign. But as counsellors, we must stay informed about programme quality, faculty, infrastructure, and graduate outcomes as these campuses mature.
With over 40 million students in India's higher education system and 70 million places needed by 2035, international universities are not just seeing an opportunity — they're responding to a real gap.
My advice to students and parents: Don't view this as 'either/or'. Understand what you want from your education — a degree, an experience, a career launchpad — and then choose the format that fits your goal.
The world is coming to India. That's a good thing. But the world outside India still has plenty to offer too.
