The Nalanda University Bill, 2010, seeks to resurrect the ancient seat of Buddhist learning at its original site in Rajgir to attract students and faculty from across south and Southeast Asia. The Bihar government has already acquired 500 acres of land for the university on the lines of the ancient university, which was founded there in 5th century AD and became a centre of learning for students f
rom across South Asia. Addressing the first meeting of the university's governing body at Rajgir, about 100 km from here, Kalam said: "We will make it a world class university, so that great research will be done here." Nalanda was a renowned university in days of yore. Students and scholars from Korea, Japan, China, Tibet, Indonesia, Persia and Turkey, besides India, attended the Nalanda University, which existed until 1197.
