🚧 Hands-on Workshop on Strain Gauge Installation & Pavement Monitoring 🚧

The Civil Engineering Department organized a one-day hands-on workshop at the Rajkot–Morbi Highway Project Site, providing students with practical exposure to pavement monitoring techniques.

Students learned strain gauge installation, instrumentation, calibration, data acquisition, and analysis of pavement behavior under real traffic loads. Live demonstrations helped participants understand the role of strain data in pavement performance evaluation, structural health monitoring, and pavement design validation.

The workshop offered valuable field experience, enhancing students' practical knowledge and industry readiness in Transportation Engineering.

📊 Gaining insights beyond the classroom!

The Department of Management, Darshan University, organized an engaging expert talk on "Decoding Commodities and Derivatives Market" for BBA Semester 5 and B.Com. Semester 5 students.

We were honored to host Ms. Soniya Mashelkar, an experienced SEBI trainer, in collaboration with MCX. The session provided valuable knowledge about commodity trading, derivatives, risk management, and emerging career opportunities in the financial sector.

With enthusiastic participation from around 200 students, the event served as an excellent platform to connect academic concepts with real-world market practices.

Civil Engineering students recently visited the Machhu-II Dam as part of an academic field study to gain practical exposure to dam engineering and water resource management. During the visit, they observed the dam's structural features, chainage system, different types of gates and their operating mechanisms, and the water intake and distribution network supplying the city and irrigation canals. Students also studied the Head Regulator (HR), catchment area, and inspection gallery, gaining insights into routine inspection and maintenance practices. In addition, they witnessed the ongoing grouting work, where engineers explained the objectives, methodology, and significance of grouting in controlling seepage and enhancing the structural stability and longevity of the dam. This field visit effectively bridged classroom learning with real-world engineering practices, enriching students' understanding of hydraulic structures, dam maintenance, and sustainable water management systems.

Prof. (Dr.) Ujjval J. Solanki delivered an Expert Talk on “Construction and Design Practices for Concrete Pavement” for the Assistant Engineers and Additional Assistant Engineers of the Roads & Buildings Department, Government of Gujarat, at Staff Training College (STC), Gandhinagar.

The session covered key aspects of concrete pavement construction, including subgrade and base preparation, drainage provisions, Dry Lean Concrete (DLC), separation membrane, quality control practices, cracking mechanisms, panel sizing, texturing, and cumulative fatigue damage for enhancing pavement durability.

Prof. (Dr.) Ujjval J. Solanki highlighted two critical factors for durable concrete pavement construction: maintaining a low water-cement ratio (less than 0.40) and ensuring groove cutting is completed within 24 hours of concrete casting. The talk also covered bottom-up and top-down cracking mechanisms, the importance of optimum panel size, surface texturing, and the concept of cumulative fatigue damage and its influence on concrete pavement performance.
