shikesh, affiliated to the HNB Garhwal University, is one of the best academic institutions of the newly created Uttarakhand State. It was started by the state Government of undivided Uttar Pradesh in July 1973 and is spread over 49 acres. It is one of the institutions catering to the academic need of western part of Uttarakhand comprising complex social milieu. The College is surrounded by picturesque foot hills of the Great Himalayas. Rishikesh, the city in which the College is situated is the place of Sages and is the famous spiritual town on the right bank of the holy river Ganga. The legend of Uttarakhand begins from Rishikesh. The city is Gateway to Char-Dham Yatra, Sikh shrine Hemkund sahib and the Valley of Flowers. The Sacred River flows in a meandering fashion and touches famous Ashrams along its bank pulsating the city life with spiritual learning, meditation and Yoga. In the rapidly changing scenario of higher education, the Government of Uttarakhand, realizing the necessity for change, has formulated a scheme of selecting some colleges to develop them as ‘Centre for Excellence’ in order to improve the standard of higher education and to make it job-oriented. This College has won the distinction in having been selected as one of three Excellent Colleges of the state from the year 2003-04 and sincere efforts are being made to develop it further towards excellence. Accreditation of the college was done by the Peer Team appointed by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council), Bangalore, an autonomous body of the University Grants Commission. The Self-Study Report submitted by the college to NAAC contained well-explained details on all the seven criteria indicating the excellence shown by teaching methodology, use of latest teaching aids, academic qualifications and progress in research and writing of text-books by teachers, discipline among students, availability of professional courses, field visits and visits to institutes, participation of teachers in international conferences abroad, organizing of many conferences by the College, research in many departments leading to Ph.D. degree
hard work by non-teaching staff, support of alumni and good relationship with parents and continuous efforts of the College for improvement in academic standards and atmosphere of the campus. The Peer Team inspected the infrastructure of the College for two days (2nd and 3rd September 2004) and interacted with parents, alumni, teachers, non-teaching staff and students separately. They discussed achievements and shortcomings of the College with all the components of the College, and enquired about the efforts put up before the concerned authorities. They showed their satisfaction orally in the exit meeting and then in their report presented to the NAAC. Considering the achievements of the College, availability of all necessary facilities and the healthy environment, the Peer Team awarded “A” Grade to the College (with 86% score) which makes this as the only college with this grade till date in the State. This is a matter of pride for the staff and students. This grade was secured by the College by the credits given on the basis of available infrastructure, best facilities, excellence shown by teachers, non-teaching staff and students, and the relationship of the College with parents and alumni. The achievements of the College were acknowledged at length by the Peer Team. The College strives for higher grade than the present one in the next accreditation under the dynamic leadership of the Principal.
