This is one more mail sent to the Director, NIT Rourkela requesting to reconsider the decision of changing the Convocation dress code to Sambalpuri Attire. Please go through the letter and if you too feel the same, jolt down your opinions and mail the concerned authority.

Sir,

With respect to subject cited above, I wish to pen down the following few thoughts on behalf of the entire UG Batch of 2017.

I hope the authorities are aware of growing dissent amongst the student fraternity in lieu of the recent notice that has come up with certain modifications in the convocation attire.Convocation is not just any other event that keeps happening every year, its an emotional final farewell to the institute and one last moment to relive the glorious memories that we have built. Every student ,be it undergraduate or post graduate, awaits with anxiety and enthusiasm to return back to the alma matter to grace this occasion.

While we all were excited about it,the recent notice seems to have drained out our emotions and there has been growing voices of even backing out of this event. There was a consensus emerged to do away with the gowns and caps that are usually worn by students at the convocation ceremony at universities and other higher education institutions. As per the report of Hindustan Times dated Sept 15,2017 only 2 institutes in India have adopted some kind of traditional wear, while the rest still follow the same gown. Today as I write this mail, the Hon'ble Vice President of India has graced the convocation of KIIT University in Bhubaneswar,Odisha, himself in the gown, and presented the degree holders with degrees. This issue needs proper consensus amongst the student masses because it is after all the students who needs to be aware of the culture rather than imposing this as an authoritarianism. I really do not understand how can an event of 2-3 hrs in some ethnic wear instill our faith in tradition and culture. Ours is culture that has a legacy of ages and we do need such steps to showcase our faith in our culture.

If we wanted to do away with gowns, we could have taken an alternate way by switching to complete formal wear as is practised in IIMs and other top notch management instutes across the nation. Not only was the attire changed, it was even imposed to wear a specific print of the same. On one hand we keep talking of removing the feeling of regionalism from campus and on the other hand we are taking these steps that somehow hurt the feelings of the student fraternity. How can you justify the idea of a south indian wearing a kurta pyajama and not dhoti or lungi?? Wont they feel they are isolated??

Since you have taken charge, there has been radical changes in the system. And we the student as well as alumni fraternity have always welcomed your decisions. But Sir this time we would politely disagree with this decision of yours and expect you to take some quick action so that together we can all put up a great show. Convocation wont be convocation if the entire batch doesnt participate and I hope you would agree with me on this point

This is the mail sent to the Director, NIT Rourkela requesting to reconsider the decision of changing the Convocation dress code to Sambalpuri Attire. Please go through the letter and if you too feel the same, jolt down your opinions and mail the concerned authority.

Good afternoon Sir,

I am ######XX from the batch of 2017 (ECE) bearing the roll number 113######.

This mail is to bring to your notice the views of the students of 2017 regarding the change in convocation dress code to Sambalpuri ethnic wear. As this is one of the most important moments in our life, it would be more appropriate if the views of students is taken into consideration.

We strongly urge you to consider the below perspectives and proceed accordingly.

1) I am entirely for the expression of culture. In fact, I have regularly taken part in and enjoyed our annual multi ethnic fests where we have seen students from diverse ethnic backgrounds display their cultures. Fests like this further supplement the fact that NIT Rourkela is a melting pot where students of a multitude of backgrounds learn to become men and women in the service of our nation. I also want to convey that about 45% of degree recipients are from states other than Orissa. They would not feel the sense of pride or tradition when an attire is imposed on them. I would like to suggest a change wherin a common saree or kurta colour is prescribed with different coloured uttariyas for different batches like the tradition followed in IIT Bombay or Jadavpur University. As the name of our Institute suggests, it should be promoting our shared values rather than bringing "local heritage" into the picture.

2) And also as the institute is supposed to provide us with the Kurtas/Sarees just a day before the Convocation, it will be difficult for the girl students to get matching blouses beforehand, because there are many variants in Blue color and the matching blouses depend on the design and cloth type of saree too. It is only a token of one of the many deliberations girls would have to do before putting on a saree.

3) As the traditional attire is being adopted in all the premier institutes across India, I would like to point out the difference between those institutes policy with our policy. Some IIT's ask the students to wear the traditional attire in the prescribed color, say Blue. Then the students are free to wear any blue colored dress/saree they are comfortable with and come to Convocation. Few among such IITs provide black gowns/transitional shawls representing culture to wear over the dress they wore. But no institute adopted a policy to provide the saree/kurta just a day before Convocation to the best of my knowledge.

Please consider our views as the degree recipients. The most viable solution, to the best of my knowledge, is either continuing the previous years tradition; where degree recepients may be asked to wear traditional dresses of their choice and the institute providing the black gown to wear over it or by prescribing a common color dress code and giving us the flexibility of wearing the kurta/saree of our choice.
Thanking you sir,
