On September 22, 2023, students from Hongirana School of Excellence took part in the Student Scientist Connect 2023 event, organized by Jigyasa, CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories during the One Week One Lab initiative. The participants, namely Savi Prasad, Sinchana M, Vathsalya B S, Adipa A Gurjar, Kishan Negalur, Rachit Gowda, Kishan K Jog, and Sumanth Shenoy, were under the guidance of mentors Mr. Rohith V Sagar and Mrs. Ambika P Pai.
The program was meticulously organized, with a strong emphasis on student development. The distinguished Chief Guest, Professor Rajkumar S Pant from IIT Bombay, delivered an engaging session on the operational mechanics of flight. Using miniature dummy models, he provided a hands-on demonstration, sparking great enthusiasm among the students. His presentation left no student without a solid understanding of flight mechanisms, and many were inspired to strive for admission into esteemed institutions like IIT.
Following Professor Pant's session, Dr. Abhay A Pashilkar, Director of NAL, awarded participation certificates, highly valuable for future endeavors. One of our students, Kishan K Jog, had the privilege of conversing with an aerospace engineer who had graduated from IIT, gaining invaluable insights into the aerospace field and JEE preparation tips, which he later shared with his peers.
An aerospace-themed quiz was conducted, offering enticing prizes to the winners. Afterwards, students and mentors were taken to an exhibition showcasing various sensors manufactured at NAL, including those utilized in Chandrayaan 3. Detailed explanations were provided, and students had the unique opportunity to sit inside the SARAS Mk II aircraft. Mentors even experienced the pilot's perspective firsthand. Students also explored India's first all-composite two-seater aircraft, Hansa-NG.
A demonstration of flight operations was presented, allowing students, some of whom had never flown before, to experience it virtually. They were also introduced to the in-development octocopter drone. The quiz winners were rewarded with exciting prizes at the conclusion of the event.
To acknowledge outstanding performance, schools were presented with captivating science kits, motivating students and nurturing their curiosity about aerospace. Hongirana also received a generous gift of science kits from NAL as a token of appreciation for their students' active participation in the workshop.
