ByteDance, the Beijing-based parent company of TikTok, is the world’s largest social media firm by revenue, reporting about $48 billion in Q2 2025 and surpassing Meta for the first time in that period ¹. Founded by Zhang Yiming, ByteDance is valued at over $330 billion as of late 2025 following an employee share buyback ² ¹. The company operates TikTok globally and Douyin in China, both powered by its AI-driven recommendation algorithm that drives user engagement and rapid growth.
The company faces significant regulatory challenges, particularly in the United States. In April 2024, President Joe Biden signed legislation requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok’s US operations within nine months or face a ban, a law upheld by the Supreme Court in January 2025 ³. ByteDance responded by forming TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC with Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX, where non-Chinese investors hold an 80.1% stake while ByteDance retains 19.9% ⁴ ⁵. China has opposed a forced sale, citing restrictions on exporting its content-recommendation algorithm technology ⁶.
Beyond TikTok, ByteDance is expanding aggressively into artificial intelligence. It plans capital expenditures of up to $70 billion in 2026 and $100 billion in 2027 to build AI data centers and develop models like its chatbot Doubao ⁷. The company is also selling its TikTok AI technology through a new division, BytePlus, to clients including India’s GamesApp and US fashion app Goat ⁸. In India, where TikTok has been banned since 2020, ByteDance announced plans for a $100 million data centre to comply with new data protection rules ⁹.
