The Department of Sociology, GSHS Hyderabad, organized an invited talk on No Single Lens in Enough: Challenges of Interdisciplinary Research on Human Trafficking in India today. It was delivered by Dr. Ajailiu Niumai, Professor of Sociology, University of Hyderabad. The event was chaired by Dr. Rathin Roy, Dean, GSHS.
Dr. Niumai highlighted the complex and multidimensional nature of human trafficking, emphasizing that it cannot be understood through a single disciplinary perspective. She explained that trafficking is rooted in economic, political, historical, and cultural factors and therefore demands on interdisciplinary research.
She identified poverty, unemployment, gender inequality, and social discrimination as the major drivers of trafficking and emphasized the need for stronger policies, rehabilitation measures, and financial support for vulnerable communities.
During the interactive session, Dr. Niumai said that the ultimate objective of her research is to inform policymakers and contribute to developing effective strategies to make India free from human trafficking.
