The Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital, popularly known as NRS Medical College, Kolkata or NRS Hospital, is a premier medical teaching institution and public hospital at Sealdah, in the heart of Kolkata. It was formerly known as the Campbell Medical School.
In 1864, the Sealdah Market Building at Central Hall was converted to Sealdah Municipal Hospital. On 1 December 1873, the Sealdah Medical School was established. They renamed it to the Campbell Medical School, in 1884, soon after which in the July of 1948, it was upgraded to the Campbell Medical College. After independence from the British rule, on 19 August 1950, the College was renamed the Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College after the name of the great freedom fighter, and the college's famous alumnus, physician Sir Nilratan Sircar.
The institution, run by the Government of West Bengal, is affiliated with West Bengal University of Health Sciences. It has both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in different pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical departments. It is recognized under the Medical Council of India, New Delhi.
