“Educational Field Trip Report to Yuksom, West Sikkim”
(8th -10th November 2025)
The Department of Tourism, Sanchaman Limboo Government College, Aarigaon, Gyalshing organized an educational field trip to Yuksom, West Sikkim for the 5th Semester Tourism Honours students from 8th to 10th November 2025. The trip was conducted under the guidance of the department faculties- Dr. Dawa Doma Sherpa, Assistant Professor and Head, Mr. Amit Rai, and Mr. Sangam Rai (Assistant Professors).
The main objective of the visit was to provide students with hands-on experience in camping activities, along with first- hand exposure to tourism resources, heritage and historical sites, and sustainable tourism practices. This field- based learning experience aims to enhance their practical understanding of the subject as part of their academic curriculum. Students also conducted a research survey as part of their 2nd Sessional Test during the visit.
During the field trip, students explored major tourist attractions such as Dubdi Monastery, Coronation Throne, Karthok Lake, and Kiwi Garden, and the starting point of the Dzongri-Goechala Trek. They interacted with local homestay owners, guides, and community members to understand the socio-economic impacts of tourism. A short trekking and camping activity was also conducted to experience adventure tourism in the region.
Both students and faculty members stayed in tents during the trip, which provided them with firsthand experiences of camping-based tourism and outdoor learning.
The students also observed the presence of well organized waste management system under the Rural Development Department (RDD), which plays an important role in maintaining cleanliness and promoting sustainable tourism in Yuksom.
The trip helped students gain hand-on-experience in data collection and field research. It also enhanced their understanding of ecotourism, community participation, and responsible tourism.
Overall, the field trip to Yuksom was educational, informative, and provided valuable insights into sustainable tourism practices in Sikkim.
