World Environment Day 2026 Celebration

A One-Day National Seminar on “Environmental Sustainability in Smart City Construction and Urban Planning” was successfully organized on 5 June 2026 at the Guest House Auditorium, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, on the occasion of World Environment Day 2026. The program was jointly organized by the Institution of Engineers (India), Silchar Local Center, and the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), NIT Silchar.
The gathering was addressed by several distinguished dignitaries, including:

• Prof. R.D. Misra, President, IIC, NIT Silchar
• Prof. P.N. Das, Department of Electrical Engineering, NIT Agartala, and Secretary, IEI Tripura State Center

• Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.) B.K.S. Sanjay, President, AIIMS Guwahati (Guest of Honor)
• Prof. Dilip Kumar Baidya, Director, NIT Silchar (Patron)
• Shri Parimal Suklabaidya, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Silchar (Chief Guest)
A major highlight of the program was the address by Prof. Dilip Kumar Baidya, Director, NIT Silchar, who enlightened the audience about the institute's sustained efforts in environmental conservation and sustainable campus development. He elaborated on various green initiatives undertaken by NIT Silchar, including extensive plantation drives, preservation of natural biodiversity, water conservation measures, adoption of renewable energy, waste management practices, and the promotion of environmentally responsible campus operations. Prof. Baidya also highlighted the institute's remarkable achievement in global sustainability rankings, emphasizing NIT Silchar's recognition in the prestigious UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, which reflects the institute's commitment to creating a sustainable and eco-friendly academic environment. His address inspired participants to adopt environmentally conscious practices in both professional and personal spheres.
In his address as the Chief Guest, Shri Parimal Suklabaidya, Hon'ble Member of Parliament, Silchar, emphasized that while development and modernization are essential for economic growth and societal progress, they must be pursued in harmony with environmental conservation. He highlighted that indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources and environmental degradation pose serious threats to human survival and future generations. Stressing the importance of sustainable development, he urged all stakeholders—including policymakers, industries, academic institutions, and citizens—to adopt environmentally responsible practices. He remarked that true progress can only be achieved when developmental activities are carried out with due regard for ecological balance, as a healthy environment is fundamental to human existence and well-being.
The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Agimitra Biswas, Secretary of IEI Silchar Local Center, followed by the National Anthem. Subsequently, the dignitaries participated in a tree plantation program, symbolizing their commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
Following the high tea session, the technical program began with a keynote lecture by Prof. A.K. Dey, Professor (HAG), Department of Civil Engineering, NIT Silchar, who shared valuable insights into sustainable infrastructure development and urban planning challenges.
The second keynote lecture was delivered by Prof. Jaykumar K.V., Prof. Emeritus, IIT Dharwad, who discussed innovative approaches and emerging technologies for achieving sustainability in smart city development.
The third keynote lecture was delivered by Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.). B.K.S. Sanjay, President, AIIMS Guwahati, who highlighted the relationship between environmental sustainability, public health, and quality of life, emphasizing the need for environmentally conscious policies and practices.
The organizers expressed their sincere gratitude to all distinguished guests, speakers, participants, sponsors, and volunteers whose contributions ensured the event's grand success.
