Zareena Begum, a respected resident of Shiraz-i-Hind, Lucknow was a disciple of the great Begum Akhtar. She spent a good proportion of her life singing in royal courts in the Doab region of Awadh and larger Uttar Pradesh, the Rohilla rulers of Rampur being particularly fond of her. Spending her last days in penury out of her house in Aminabad, the Begum passed away in 2018 at the age of 88. She was the last scion of the tradition of court singing in Awadh, and the tawaif community at large.

The art form prominent in the royal states of Rajasthan, Rajput painting is an umbrella term for eight different schools of painting, many of which display deep influence of Mughal art. Phad, which literally translates to ‘fold’, is a type of scroll painting that narrates elaborate religious stories of local deities and gods. Mandana paintings are one of the oldest tribal art forms, created by the Meena tribe in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Usually painted by women on the floors and walls of mud huts during festivals and ceremonies, the paintings are intended as auspicious symbols that ward off evil and welcome the blessings of gods.

Mughal art and architecture are amongst the most celebrated art forms in India, especially Mughal miniatures. A derivative of Persian art tradition with Hindu, Buddhist and Jain influences, Mughal art flourished under the patronage of ruling Mughal emperors.
Pahari is the name given to Rajput paintings from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. This particular art form fuses Hindu mythology, the folk art of the local hills and Mughal miniature techniques. A tribal art that is found mostly in the North Sahyadri Range in India, Warli paintings are made using basic materials for painting like rice paste with water and gum for the white paint and a bamboo stick that has been chewed on that serves as a brush. They usually portray scenes of hunting, fishing, farming and so on.

From the southern region of India, these art forms have held their significance over the centuries. Kalamkari, from Andhra Pradesh, is a method of hand printing textiles that is now celebrated on runways. Thanjavur, or Tanjore paintings have a rich history in Tamil Nadu and are famous for their colours and gold foil overlays. Mysore paintings from Karnataka are similar, but renowned for the more delicate patterns, colours, and Gesso work.

These paintings are examples of Madhubani art which is practiced in Bihar, Kalighat painting from Kolkata and the Pattachitra style from Orissa. The paintings showcase diverse methods and deal with different themes. The first was traditionally practiced by women and made on walls of homes to decorate them. Pattachitra often had religious undertones and adorned temple walls. Kalighat painting, on the other hand, tried to capture a changing social milieu.
