1. Introduction
World Statistics Day is a global celebration held every five years to highlight the achievements of the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and the importance of trustworthy data in shaping our future. The 4th World Statistics Day, under the global theme “Quality Statistics and data for Everyone”.
In alignment with this global celebration, the Department of Mathematics and Economics at SRM University Delhi NCR, Sonepat, Haryana organized a special event to mark this occasion. The event aimed to engage students with the real-world power of data and statistics, moving beyond textbook theory to appreciate its application in solving complex, real-world problems. The program was designed to be both informative and interactive, fostering a deeper appreciation for the field among the next generation of data scientists, economists, and mathematicians.
2. Objective
The primary objective of the event was to ignite a passion for statistics and data science among students and to underscore their indispensable role in evidence-based decision-making. The specific goals were:
• To educate students about the significance of World Statistics Day and the 2025 theme,
" Quality Statistics and data for Everyone"
• To provide intellectual stimulation through an expert lecture on contemporary applications of statistics.
• To develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills through healthy competition.
• To foster interdisciplinary dialogue between students of Mathematics and Economics, highlighting the symbiotic relationship between the two fields.
• To create an engaging platform for students to network and share their enthusiasm for data.
3. Event Highlights
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from undergraduate and postgraduate students of Mathematics and Economics. The agenda was thoughtfully curated to balance knowledge acquisition with interactive engagement.
A. Guest Lecture by Prof. Aquil Ahmed
The cornerstone of the event was an insightful and inspiring guest lecture by Prof. Aquil Ahmed, Professor, Department of Statistics and Operations Research, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh.
• Topic & Content: Prof. Ahmed eloquently delved into the 2025 theme, explaining what constitutes "trustworthy data." He elaborated on the pillars of data quality—including accuracy, reliability, timeliness, and relevance—and the ethical frameworks necessary to maintain public trust. Using compelling case studies, he demonstrated how robust statistical methods are used in diverse fields such as public health (e.g., tracking disease outbreaks), economics (e.g., calculating inflation and GDP), and climate science.
• Engagement with Students: He particularly emphasized the career opportunities emerging in data analytics and statistical modeling, encouraging students to build a strong foundational knowledge. His presentation was rich with real-life examples that resonated with both mathematics and economics students, effectively bridging theoretical concepts with practical application. An interactive Q&A session followed, where students posed thoughtful questions on topics ranging from the misuse of statistics to the future of AI in data analysis.
B. Quiz and Puzzle Competition
Following the lecture, a vibrant Quiz and Puzzle Competition was held to test the participants' acumen and speed. The competition was designed to be challenging yet enjoyable, focusing on logical reasoning, statistical fundamentals, and economic data interpretation.
• Format: Students participated in teams, promoting collaboration and teamwork. The quiz comprised multiple rounds, including a rapid-fire round, a visual data interpretation round (using graphs and charts), and a complex puzzle-solving round.
• Themes: The questions covered a wide array of topics, including probability theorems, famous statisticians, economic indices, and logical deduction puzzles that required a statistical mindset.
• Participation: The hall was filled with a spirit of friendly competition. The event successfully turned abstract concepts into an engaging battle of wits, with students actively discussing strategies and solutions. The high level of participation and the quality of answers reflected a strong grasp and interest in the subject matter.
4. Key Takeaways
The 4th World Statistics Day celebration was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees. The key takeaways from the event were:
• Data as a Public Good: The event reinforced the idea that reliable statistics are not just numbers but a vital public good that is essential for transparent governance and an informed citizenry.
• Interdisciplinary Power: The presence of students from both Mathematics and Economics highlighted how statistical tools are the common language for quantitative analysis across disciplines, enabling a more holistic understanding of complex issues.
• Bridging Theory and Practice: Prof. Ahmed’s lecture successfully connected classroom learning with its powerful applications in the real world, inspiring students to view statistics as a dynamic and impactful career path.
• Skill Development: The quiz and puzzle competition sharpened participants' analytical, logical reasoning, and quick-thinking skills in a fun and collaborative environment.
