Obituary: A Tribute to the Life and Legacy of Professor Marc Galanter โ€“ An Extraordinary Scholar and an Inspiring Humanist.

We mourns the passing of Professor Marc Galanter (1931โ€“2026), a towering figure in socio-legal scholarship and a lifelong friend of Indiaโ€™s legal community.

A distinguished academic and mentor, Professor Galanter shaped generations of scholars worldwide and redefined how we understand law not as abstract doctrine, but as a living system shaped by power, inequality, and society. His seminal work on litigation, inequality, and legal culture continues to influence legal thought across jurisdictions.

His deep and enduring engagement with India set him apart. He immersed himself in its institutions, contributed to key debates, and helped frame global understanding of issues such as caste, access to justice, and affirmative action. His association with JGU and JGLS during their formative years played a vital role in shaping their global and interdisciplinary vision.

Bridging India and the United States, Professor Galanter ensured that Indian legal realities found their rightful place in global discourse. Beyond his scholarship, he leaves behind a vibrant intellectual community inspired by his rigour, generosity, and commitment to justice.

His legacy will continue to guide the pursuit of justice in India and around the world.

We are pleased to share that Ms Riddhi Naveen Raheja, a BCom. LL.B. (Hons.) student (2024-2029) at Jindal Global Law School (JGLS), O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) recently authored an article titled โ€œThe Phantom Of Control: Reassessing The โ€˜Material Influenceโ€™ Standard Under The Competition (Amendment) Act, 2023 And Its M&A Implicationsโ€, published in the IJLLR - Indian Journal of Law and Legal Research

This article critically examines the material influence standard, traces its judicial evolution under the Competition Commission of India (CCI) decisional practice, and evaluates the resulting compliance burdens and structural uncertainties for the M&A ecosystem. The author argues that without a codified, non-exhaustive list of rights constituting material influence, the standard risks becoming an instrument of regulatory overreach rather than a tool of competition protection, and proposes a framework for CCI regulation that could resolve this ambiguity in a manner consistent with global best practices.

The Cyril Shroff Centre for AI, Law and Regulation and Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) recently hosted a fireside chat for the India@2047 lecture series. The theme for the lecture is "The Moderation Machine: AI, speech and platform power".

The guests for this event were Prof. Julia Hรถrnle, Professor, Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London, and Rodney D. Ryder, Founding Partner, Scriboard [Advocates & Legal Consultants]. The event was moderated by Prof. Nikhil N. , Assistant Director, Cyril Shroff Centre for AI, Law and Regulationย and Assistant Professor, Jindal Global Law School.

The lecture, followed by the fireside chat, aims to examine how automated moderation systems, recommender architectures, and platform enforcement practices shape what is visible, amplified, or silenced online.
ย
It will also explore the legal and policy challenges these systems pose for free expression, accountability, intermediary liability, and democratic participation. At a time when platforms serve as key sites of public discourse, this discussion will examine how law and governance frameworks can respond to the growing influence of AI-mediated speech control while preserving transparency, fairness, and institutional accountability.

Here are some glimpses from the event.

Some educators donโ€™t just teach the law, they push you to rethink it.

At Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU), Prof. Devina Malaviya brings together academic excellence, courtroom experience, and research that engages with some of the most evolving questions in law today.

From working at the Supreme Court of India to contributing to contemporary debates on rights and society, her journey reflects how legal education can be both rigorous and reflective.

This is where learning goes beyond understanding the law, to questioning it.

We are pleased to share that an Op-Ed by Prof. Kashish Makkar from the Cyril Shroff Centre for AI, Law and Regulation, has been published by The Telegraph .

Titled โ€œThe orange economyโ€, the piece was published in both the print and digital editions of the newspaper today.

Please see here the link to the Op-Ed: https://www.telegraphindia.com/opinion/the-orange-economy-government-schemes-and-taking-cues-from-south-korea-prnt/cid/2156114

Prof. Makkar argues that stimulating quality digital content creation requires more effort than simply monetary investments as proposed in the latest Union Budget. He argues that the government should draw from the experience of South Korea and revive the culture of collective trust as a matter of policy to bring meaningful growth from the orange economy.
