West Asia and North Africa in Transition: Prospects and Challenges
Call for Research Papers
West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region is known as the cradle of civilisations. Historically, home to first organised agricultural activities, cities, and the ancient Mesopotamian civilisation this region is known as the Fertile Crescent from the Euphrates to the Nile. The region is also the birth of three major monotheist religion; Judaism, Christianity, and Islam making it sacred for billions of people around the world.
WANA region for its history and turbulent geography has witnessed major empires; religious wars and also the advancement of new knowledge and source for European enlightenment. The shape of modern WANA was given by European powers during and after the collapse of Ottoman Empire and First World War. In the post-Ottoman order, the WANA region became the strategic asset for the colonial powers divided between the British and the French. The colonial powers divided the region into many nation states for its own fortune thus making this region strategically important for its geography as a route to other parts of the world. Besides, after the discovery of oil, oil became an asset for colonial powers but a curse for this region. The people of this region never came fully to the terms dawned via the creation of artificial boundaries in the region and later the region engulfed with the idea of Arab nationalism. The creation of nation-states had been problematic in any region of the world, but the state-formation in WANA region led to the emergence of a conflict-prone region. In addition to sui generis states of the region like Israel, Lebanon and Turkey, West Asia and North Africa has various types of regimes and governmental structures. Therefore, the region has long been a ‘chessboard’ of different models, ideologies and sometimes even leaders.
In the Post-Cold War Era, as the bipolar nature of the world order fluctuated, regional politics and conflicts came to the surface globally. WANA region already had intractable conflicts and witnessed major wars. Moreover, the multipolar structure of the region and heavy presence of external powers generated additional complexities especially the rise of non-state actors the last among them is the ‘Islamic State’. In some cases, a conflict may come to the fore with its different aspect or affiliated with another conflict –the deep sectarianism, the Kurdish question, the failing hopes of Arab Spring and now the refugee issue amidst Syrian Crisis. One acknowledges that each conflict brings further disagreements, division, and groupings not only to regional politics but also to global politics. On the other hand, complications of the region create scope for the existence of new ideas, research, and debates.
With these thoughts, we, Student Faculty Committee (SFC), wish to organise 7th Young Scholars’ Seminar, 2016 to discuss issues, concerns, challenges and prospects of the WANA in the regional and global context in order to facilitate a better understanding of the region among
