KU, JKAACL sign MoU to launch diploma in traditional and professional calligraphy

The University of Kashmir and the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly offer a Diploma Programme in Traditional and Professional Calligraphy, aimed at promoting skill-based education in calligraphy and providing structured training in the region’s traditional and contemporary calligraphic practices.

The MoU was signed by Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal and JKAACL Secretary Smt. Harvinder Kour (JKAS) in the presence of senior officials and academic functionaries of both institutions.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan said, “The programme will help place traditional calligraphic practices within a structured academic and skill-development framework, while also opening avenues for professional training.”

Shri B. M. Sharma, IFS, Principal Secretary to the Government, Department of Culture, said that such MoUs have a long-term and lasting impact and added that the Department would explore further opportunities for collaboration with the University in other areas.

Dean Academic Affairs KU Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada and Registrar KU Prof. Naseer Iqbal highlighted the academic value of the collaboration and said the programme would provide students with structured training while connecting the University’s academic framework with JKAACL’s expertise and cultural resources.

The programme will be offered through the varsity’s Shri Pran Krishan Kaul Institute of Music and Fine Arts in collaboration with JKAACL.

The two-year diploma programme will have an intake of 10 students per academic session, with eligibility for candidates who have passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination. Three months of academic instruction each year will be conducted at IMFA, while the remaining period dedicated to traditional calligraphy training will be held at JKAACL premises.

The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Habibullah Shah, Principal, IMFA KU; Dr. Ashfaq Zarri, Special Secretary to the VC KU; Ideel Saleem (JKAS), Additional Secretary, JKAACL, besides other officials.

The Institute of Home Science (IHS), University of Kashmir (KU), inaugurated a Day Care Children’s Park and a certificate-based ‘Bake to Earn’ course for young women at the Main Campus.

It aims at supporting the working campus community and promoting skill development and self-reliance among young women.

Day Care Children’s Park has been designed to provide a safe, child-friendly space for the children of the working campus community, while the ‘Bake to Earn’ course will provide young women with hands-on training in baking and related skills, enabling them to learn, create and earn.

Inaugurating the facilities, Vice-Chancellor, KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, said the initiatives reflect the University’s commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive campus while equipping young women with practical skills and opportunities for economic empowerment.
“A supportive campus must respond to the practical needs of its community while creating meaningful opportunities for skill development. The Children’s Park and ‘Bake to Earn’ course are important steps towards building a more inclusive and empowering University environment,” she said.

Dean Academic Affairs, KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, appreciated the initiatives and highlighted the importance of creating a conducive campus environment that supports the well-being and professional responsibilities of the University community.

Dean, School of Applied Sciences & Technology, KU, Prof. Mubashir Masoodi, said the initiatives reflect the practical relevance of Home Science in addressing contemporary social needs and promoting skill-based learning.

Earlier, Director, Institute of Home Science, Prof. Humaira Azim, highlighted the objectives of the two initiatives that will help create a more supportive campus environment for the working community while providing young women with practical, market-oriented skills and opportunities to grow.

The initiatives are part of varsity's efforts to promote community-oriented learning, practical skills and a supportive campus environment.

The University of Kashmir (KU) concluded the Men’s Inter-Collegiate Table Tennis Tournament and the Men’s and Women’s Inter-Department Volleyball Tournaments with a prize distribution ceremony held at the University’s Volleyball Court.

More than 550 students from KU departments, satellite campuses and colleges across the Kashmir Valley participated in the three tournaments.

In the Men’s Inter-Collegiate Table Tennis Tournament, around 100 players representing 25 colleges competed. The KU Postgraduate Team defeated Government Medical College Srinagar 3–0 in the final to win the title.

The Women’s Inter-Department Volleyball Tournament featured 17 teams and around 200 students. In the final, the Department of Persian KU defeated the Department of Physical Education and Sports KU (DPES) 2–0, retaining the title for the second consecutive year.

In the Men’s Inter-Department Volleyball Tournament, 250 students from more than 22 departments participated. The Institute of Technology (IoT), Zakura Campus KU defeated the Department of Electronics KU 2–1 in the final to claim the title.

Director, Directorate of Physical Education and Sports, Prof. Raies Ahmad Qadri, presided over the prize distribution ceremony and congratulated the participating teams, winners and runners-up.

The Department of Physics, University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with the UGC–DAE Consortium for Scientific Research (UGC–DAE CSR), Indore Centre, organised a two-day Awareness Workshop on “Utilization of In-House and Large-Scale DAE Facilities”.

The workshop familiarised faculty members and researchers from universities, colleges and research institutions with major Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) facilities, including the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Dhruva Reactor and Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), as well as advanced research infrastructure available at UGC–DAE CSR centres.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor, KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, emphasised the importance of strengthening linkages between universities and national research facilities.

Director, UGC–DAE CSR, Prof. Kaustubh R. S. Priolkar, highlighted the Consortium’s efforts to facilitate access to major DAE facilities for university and college researchers and encouraged participants to make greater use of the Collaborative Research Scheme (CRS).

Centre Directors and senior scientists from the Consortium interacted with participants and provided insights into facility access, procedural requirements and collaborative research opportunities.

The technical sessions highlighted the Indore Centre’s capabilities in material synthesis and characterisation, spectroscopy, microscopy and physical-property measurements under low-temperature and high-magnetic-field conditions. Participants were also introduced to access protocols for INDUS Synchrotron beamlines at RRCAT, besides facilities available at the Consortium’s Mumbai, Kalpakkam and Kolkata Centres, including the Bhubaneswar Node.

The workshop also highlighted the role of UGC–DAE CSR as a UGC-established Inter-University Centre and its Collaborative Research Scheme.

The Directorate of Information Technology and Support Services (IT&SS), University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with the J&K Cyber Crime Coordination Centre , J&K Police, organised a cyber awareness workshop at the Main Campus.
It aimed to sensitise students, faculty members and University officials about emerging cyber threats, digital safety and responsible online practices.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, emphasised the growing importance of cybersecurity awareness in an increasingly digital environment and stressed on the need to equip the University community with the knowledge to navigate cyberspace safely and responsibly.

Registrar, KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, underscored the importance of collective responsibility and sustained awareness in addressing challenges in the digital domain.

Prof. Mubashir Hussain Masoodi, Dean, School of Applied Sciences, also addressed the gathering and highlighted the need for greater awareness about evolving digital threats.
SSP, JK4C, Mohammad Yaseen Kichloo, IPS, conducted the technical session, covering emerging cyber threats, online fraud, cyber hygiene and digital safety, besides demonstrating common cyber risks and preventive measures. The session also featured hands-on demonstrations and an interactive discussion with participants.
The programme also included an interaction between Mr. Kichloo and students on cyber safety, online security and responsible digital practices.
Earlier, Director, IT&SS KU, Dr. Maroof Naieem Qadri, highlighted the need for sustained cyber awareness, good cyber hygiene and capacity building to strengthen the University’s digital ecosystem.
Nasir Kirmani, DySP, Zonal Cyber Police Kashmir, along with other JK4C officials, faculty members, students and University officials, actively participated in the workshop.

The Health Centre, University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with Kashmir Eye Hospital, organised a two-day Mega Eye Screening-cum-Awareness Camp at the Main Campus.

The camp offered on-site clinical screenings and specialist consultations, with services including vision testing, auto-refraction, keratometry, non-contact tonometry for intraocular pressure measurement, distance and near vision refraction, slit-lamp examination and dilated fundus examination.

Vice-Chancellor, KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, in her message, appreciated the initiative and emphasised the importance of preventive healthcare and timely screening.

While visiting the camp and taking stock of the arrangements Registrar, KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, highlighted the importance of making essential healthcare services accessible to students and staff on campus and appreciated the Health Centre and Kashmir Eye Hospital for organising the camp.
Specialist consultations were provided by Dr. Imtiyaz Ahmad Dar, Dr. Syed Tafhiem-ul-Aalam, Dr. Reem Javeed, Dr. Jasiya Bashir and Dr. Qazi Afshan Sumaiya from Kashmir Eye Hospital.
The camp was coordinated by Dr. Khalid Nazir, Coordinator, Health Centre KU, and supervised by Dr. Surayya Jan and Dr. Azhar Ahad, Medical Officers, Health Centre, KU.
