The University of Jammu and Kashmir was founded in the year 1948. In the year 1969 it was bifurcated into two full-fledged Universities: University of Kashmir at Srinagar and University of Jammu at Jammu. The University of Kashmir is situated at Hazratbal in Srinagar. It is flanked by the world famous Dal Lake on its eastern side and Nigeen Lake on the western side. The Main Campus of the Universi

ty spread over 247 acres of land is divided into three parts – Hazratbal Campus, Naseem Bagh Campus and Mirza Bagh Campus (serving residential purpose). Additional land has been acquired at Zakura near the main campus for further expansion of the University. The tranquil ambience of the Campus provides the right kind of atmosphere for serious study and research. Over the Years University of Kashmir has expanded substantially. It has established Satellite Campuses at Anantnag (South Campus) , Baramulla (North Campus) and Kupwara (Kupwara Campus) to make higher education more accessible to people living in remote areas of Kashmir valley. The University has also established a Sub-Office at Jammu to cater to the needs of the candidates enrolled with the University from outside Kashmir. The University is committed to provide an intellectually stimulating environment for productive learning to enhance the educational, economic, scientific, business and cultural environment of the region. The University offers programmes in all the major faculties; Arts, Business & Management Studies, Education, Law, Applied Sciences & Technology, Biological Sciences, Physical & Material Sciences, Social Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering, Oriental Learning and Music & Fine Arts. It has been constantly introducing innovative/ new programmes to cater to the needs and demands of the students and the society. Over the years, the University has marched towards excellence in its programmes and activities. It has been re-accredited as Grade-A+ University by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India. *Prof. Mubashir Hussain Masoodi appointed Dean, School of Applied Sciences & Technology*

The University of Kashmir has appointed Prof. Mubashir Hussain Masoodi, Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, as the Dean, School of Applied Sciences & Technology.

Prof. Masoodi is a distinguished academic, researcher and administrator with around 25 years of experience in teaching, research and institutional leadership. Prior to his appointment as Dean, he served as Head, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2021–24) and is presently also serving as Director, Kupwara Satellite Campus.

Prof. Masoodi obtained his PhD from Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, and subsequently pursued a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR), University of Mississippi, USA. He is a recipient of several prestigious honours and fellowships, including the Indo-US UGC Raman Postdoctoral Fellowship, Young Scientist Award-2010 conferred by the J&K State Council for Science, Technology & Innovation, and the Best Publication Award of the Indian Drug Manufacturers’ Association (IDMA), Mumbai.

His research, supported by reputed national funding agencies including UGC, ICMR, Ministry of AYUSH/CCRUМ, J&KST&IC and SRISTI-BIRAC, focuses on bioactive natural products, semi-synthetic drug development, drug discovery and pharmacological evaluation, with an emphasis on translating natural-product research into potential therapeutic applications.

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and Innovations (CIRI), University of Kashmir, organised a distinguished lecture titled “Understanding Metabolism and Protein Modifications Through Mass Spectrometry”, delivered by eminent structural biochemist and enzymologist Prof. Hemalata Balaram, JNCASR, Bengaluru. The lecture explored the growing potential of mass spectrometry in studying metabolites, proteins and molecular interactions, with applications spanning metabolomics, biomedical research, drug discovery and understanding disease mechanisms.

The session provided students and young researchers valuable insights into how advanced mass spectrometry-based approaches can offer sensitive and comprehensive understanding of complex biological systems and metabolic pathways. An engaging interaction with faculty and students followed the lecture, focusing on emerging applications of the technology in interdisciplinary research. Earlier, Dr. Altaf Bhat, Coordinator, CIRI, welcomed the guests and emphasised the importance of adopting cutting-edge technologies to advance interdisciplinary research.

The programme reaffirmed CIRI’s commitment to promoting scientific innovation, advanced research and meaningful academic exchange.

The two-day orientation programme on “Promoting MOOCs in Higher Education: Integration, Visibility and Enrollment” began today at the Media House Auditorium, University of Kashmir.

Organised by the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC), University of Kashmir, the programme focuses on promoting MOOCs, enhancing their integration in higher education and encouraging greater student enrollment through SWAYAM.

The Shri Pran Krishan Kaul Institute of Music & Fine Arts (IMFA), University of Kashmir, celebrated World Photography Day with the inauguration of a two-day photography exhibition, “Untitled Frames,” organised by the Department of Applied Art. The exhibition featured works by students, emerging photographers and invited photographers, presenting varied perspectives and visual narratives through photography.

The invited section featured works by Naushad Hussain, Sajad Ahmad Shalla, Dr. Hilal Ahmad Khan and Irfan Latif Mir, alongside student works. The exhibition was inaugurated in the presence of Prof. Aejaz Mohammed Sheikh, Dean, School of Arts, Languages & Literature, KU, and Dr. Habibullah Shah, Principal, IMFA. Curated by Zahoor Din Lone and Tayib Hazoor Mughal, the exhibition is being held at the Open Air Studio, IMFA.

The celebrations also included a Photo Walk on and a film screening, including a film on renowned photographer Raghu Rai. Other scheduled activities were held at the Conference Hall, IMFA, providing students and photography enthusiasts an opportunity to engage with different aspects of photographic practice.

An awareness programme under the “Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan” was organised at the University of Kashmir’s Kupwara Campus with the objective of sensitising young students about the harmful effects of drug abuse and promoting the message of a healthy and drug-free society.

The programme was organised under the convenership of Prof. Mubashir H. Masoodi, Director, Kupwara Campus, with Dr. Farooq, Dr. Irfan and Dr. Mariyah as Co-Conveners. DySP Mubashir Niyaz, Kupwara, and Dr. Shibeer Ahmad Bhat, Assistant Controller Drugs (HQ), Kashmir, were also present on the occasion as special invitees.

Students from eight Higher Secondary Schools participated enthusiastically in the programme.

The programme featured four competitions—Short Play, Kashmiri Poetry, Song and Speech—through which students presented creative and impactful performances highlighting the harmful consequences of drug abuse, the importance of prevention and the collective responsibility of society in combating substance abuse.

Prof. Mubashir H. Masoodi emphasised that educational institutions have a crucial role in creating awareness among young people about the dangers of substance abuse. He stressed on the need for sustained awareness initiatives involving students, families, communities and concerned agencies to prevent drug abuse and promote a healthy, responsible and drug-free society.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Farooq Ahmad, while the proceedings were conducted by Mudabir Ahmad.

Inter-College Cycling Race Organised at University of Kashmir

The Directorate of Physical Education and Sports, University of Kashmir, today organised an Inter-College Cycling Race for both men and women categories.

The race was flagged off by Prof. Raies Ahmad, Director, Directorate of Physical Education and Sports, University of Kashmir.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Raies Ahmad said, “Cycling promotes fitness, discipline and a spirit of healthy competition among students. We are committed to providing our students with greater opportunities to participate in sports and develop their physical and sporting abilities.”

A large number of students from various affiliated colleges participated in the event with enthusiasm and competitive spirit.

The Malaviya Mission Teacher’s Training Centre (MMTTC), University of Kashmir, concluded a two-week offline Refresher Course in Gender Studies at the Main Campus. The course aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of contemporary gender issues, deepen academic perspectives and enhance their teaching and research capacities through expert-led sessions and interdisciplinary engagement.

The valedictory session was presided over by Prof. Chandra Bhushan Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, Vinoba Bhave University, Jharkhand. He highlighted the importance of gender-sensitive education and the role of teachers and academic institutions in fostering inclusive and equitable learning environments. Director MMTTC KU, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Nazir, also addressed the gathering, while Course Coordinator Dr. Humaira Showkat presented a brief report of the course.

Participants shared their feedback and expressed satisfaction with the learning experience and academic engagements during the programme. The valedictory session concluded with the distribution of certificates among the participants.
