For the first time in history, a PCI Member from Jammu & Kashmir, Hon’ble Shri Sushil Sudan Ji, has spoken the truth by stating that the pharmacy profession in J&K must be streamlined strictly as per PCI norms. He rightly emphasized that there should be no continuation of pseudo-pharmacist courses such as Medical Assistant programs in J&K.
As per the Pharmacy Act, 1948, the eligibility for recruitment and registration as a Pharmacist is strictly limited to holders of D.Pharmacy or B.Pharmacy qualifications. The syllabus for the Pharmacist post must also be framed according to the norms and guidelines of the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), and not the Nursing Council.
However, in the latest JKSSB 2025 notification for the Pharmacist post, although the eligibility criteria correctly follow the PCI Act (D.Pharmacy/B.Pharmacy), the prescribed syllabus is based on the Nursing syllabus. This is completely against PCI norms and undermines the professional identity and statutory framework of the pharmacy profession.

Pharmacy Graduates of Jammu & Kashmir Raise Objections on JKSSB Junior Pharmacist Syllabus Pharmacy graduates of Jammu and Kashmir have expressed deep concern and disappointment over the recently issued syllabus for the Junior Pharmacist recruitment examination by the Jammu & Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB). According to candidates, the syllabus notified by JKSSB appears to be a copy-paste version of the 2021 recruitment syllabus, which at that time had included Medical Assistants as eligible candidates. This, they allege, is a gross violation of the Pharmacy Act, 1948, and the guidelines of the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), which clearly state that the post of Junior Pharmacist can only be filled by qualified candidates holding a Diploma (D.Pharm) or Degree (B.Pharm) in Pharmacy. Background & Eligibility Issue: Earlier, Medical Assistants were wrongly made eligible for Junior Pharmacist posts, despite their training being entirely different from the Pharmacy curriculum. After continuous efforts and representations by pharmacy professionals, the authorities corrected this long-standing injustice by restricting eligibility to only Pharmacy diploma/degree holders. This position was further clarified in a reply to an RTI application (Ref: MEGEN/247/2025-02 dated 18.07.2025), where the Under Secretary to the Government, Shri Mohan Singh, stated:. 1. The eligibility for Junior Pharmacist remains strictly 10+2 with Science and Diploma/Degree in Pharmacy from a recognized institute. 2. Importantly, the reply confirmed that the syllabus for Junior Pharmacist positions must align with the norms of the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). The Syllabus Discrepancy: Despite this RTI clarification, the newly issued JKSSB syllabus includes topics related to Nursing, Operation Theatre (OT) techniques, and Medical Assistant coursework – subjects outside the core domain of pharmacy education. Candidates argue that: The syllabus does not comply with PCI norms, which mandate a pharmacy-focused syllabus. Including Nursing/OT content unfairly disadvantages pharmacy graduates, as their course structure does not include such material.

Private School Spring Buds Education Institute Budgam knows the Importance of Professional Pharmacy Degree Holders. But unfortunately our Health And Medical Education Jammu and Kashmir Does not knows the difference between Professional Pharmacy Degree holders and Medical Assistants (Pseudo -Pharmacists) .

Majority Of J &K Govt Hospital Pharmacist posts Are occupied by these Medical assistants (Pseudo -Pharmacists) or even some are promoted to Pharmacist from Class 4th posts except Skims institute Where they need only Professional Pharmacy Degree Holders. From the act Majority of Degree Holders B.Pharma,M.pharmcy of J&K Students are Seeking Facing job Crises.

Majority Of Graduate and Post graduates Pharmcy students in Jk are Working at Amrit Stores, Jan Aushdhi Stores or some are Working in other Private Hospitals at very low salaries.
