For the first time in history, a PCI Member from Jammu & Kashmir, Hon’ble Shri Sushil Sudan Ji, has spoken the truth by stating that the pharmacy profession in J&K must be streamlined strictly as per PCI norms. He rightly emphasized that there should be no continuation of pseudo-pharmacist courses such as Medical Assistant programs in J&K.
As per the Pharmacy Act, 1948, the eligibility for recruitment and registration as a Pharmacist is strictly limited to holders of D.Pharmacy or B.Pharmacy qualifications. The syllabus for the Pharmacist post must also be framed according to the norms and guidelines of the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), and not the Nursing Council.
However, in the latest JKSSB 2025 notification for the Pharmacist post, although the eligibility criteria correctly follow the PCI Act (D.Pharmacy/B.Pharmacy), the prescribed syllabus is based on the Nursing syllabus. This is completely against PCI norms and undermines the professional identity and statutory framework of the pharmacy profession.
