HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR CAREER PATH
The start of your career is an exciting time, but it can also be scary and daunting. Your whole life is ahead of you, but what should you do with it?! Choosing a career path is a big decision to make, so take your time to consider your options carefully. Here are a few tips from gAshu to help you along the way.
1. Identify your passions
Too many people jump into their first proper job without first thinking about what really makes them tick. The key to being happy at work is picking a profession that you’re passionate about. Which lines of work excite you? Which subjects make you most animated when you talk? Write down five to ten careers that follow these passions so you get an idea of where to start.
2. Analyze your strengths
Kicking off a career is easier if you pick an area that you are knowledgeable about. Consider your strengths – both your natural talents and also skills and qualifications you have studied.
Make a shortlist of the careers that you have any experience or knowledge in, as these could be your most viable options. Don’t write off other paths you are passionate about however, simply research how to get the relevant skills or experience you need!
3. Research the job market
By this point, you may have narrowed the list down to your perfect career. But will your plan survive in the world of work? It’s a good idea to research current job trends and find out if there’s a demand for that area of expertise. Even better, if you have an idea of the company you want to work for, check out their job opportunities and what they are looking for in an employee.
4. Create career goals
Once you’ve picked your career path, create short and long term goals to map out your journey. It’s a total cliché, but where do you see yourself in 5, 10 or 20 years? How will you make sure you achieve these milestones? Break them down into specific goals with set dates to mark your career success. These can be promotions, job re-locations or even setting up your own company!
5. Go for it!
When you’ve finished planning your career, the only thing left to do is to get started on achieving your dreams! Write an eye-catching CV, prepare for and ace those interviews, and you’ll soon be on the first step of your career ladder. Be warned – getting a job is not usually a quick process, so be prepared for the ups and downs
