INSPIRE #5: SVCE is proud to feature an alumnus who has made a significant mark in academia and research beyond borders.

We are delighted to feature Dr. Karthik Pattabiraman, currently a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, ranked  #45 globally in the World University Rankings.

Dr. Pattabiraman received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Illinois in 2009 and subsequently served as a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft Research.

His journey from SVCE to leading global academic and research institutions reflects the far-reaching impact of SVCE alumni across borders.

Last year, Dr. Pattabiraman received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the SVCE Alumni Association, recognising his stellar academic record and significant contributions to academia. Know more: https://blogs.ubc.ca/karthik/

From Corporate Leaders to Changemakers: 75+ Student Lives Impacted

Featuring four SVCE Class of 2001 alumni who turned a conversation into a mission for educational impact.

In 2024, Sriram Mohan, Sunil Mukundan, Satya Ramanathan, and Madhusudhan Krishnan talked about how privileged they'd been to always have access to resources when they needed them.

That conversation led to a question: Are there students at our alma mater struggling just to stay in college?

On Akshaya Tritiya, April 30, 2025, that thought turned into action with the founding of Swādhyāya Trust—an initiative committed to helping students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds complete their education and build meaningful careers. What began with four members coming together to support four students has now grown into a community of 170 members.

The Trust supports first-generation college students, students from single-parent families or without both parents, and students pursuing graduate programmes with assistance covering tuition fees, books, and coursework.

The impact so far:
75+ students supported | ₹70+ lakh raised through the network | Around 45% of students from Tier-2/3 cities | 55% women students | Collaboration with 10+ educational institutions

Beyond sponsoring tuition fees, the Trust also supports students through skilling, career guidance, and laptop assistance.

What began as a conversation among four SVCE alumni has grown into a movement creating opportunities and changing lives, one student at a time.

A proud example of SVCE alumni translating professional success into meaningful social impact.

No other better frame! Creativity has no ceiling!

A bold geometric design where lines, symmetry and structure come together, turning a functional space into an architectural statement—beautifully captured by Raghav, III Year CSE.

We are happy to announce that Dr. Aravindan M, Asst. Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, has published his recent research in a prestigious Q1 Journal!

Paper Title: Hydrogen-enabled battery recycling: Technologies, process integration, and techno-economic analysis
Journal - Elsevier : Results in Engineering
Impact Factor: 9.4 | Q1 Journal

The Big Idea: Instead of burning materials or using harsh chemicals to recycle old phone, laptop, and EV batteries, this research uses hydrogen gas made from water to safely extract valuable metals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel — recovering 99%+ of them with ~17x less pollution.

Why it matters:

- Cleaner air near recycling plants

- Less mining, more resource reuse

- Safer conditions for recycling workers

- Potentially cheaper future electronics and EVs

As e-waste keeps growing, this research offers a cleaner, smarter path to turning battery waste into a valuable resource.

Congratulations, Dr. Aravindan M!
