NIT Karnataka has announced the beginning of its one-year celebration of completing 60-years of existence. A part of the celebrations, students will be encouraged to plant one tree each and nurture its growth for the entire duration of their degree. The celebrations will see the culmination of 60 different activities in different areas such as Sports, academics, cultural, ecology, open house, convocation along with many others. An alumni meet of both the ex-students of NIT Karnataka and Karnataka Regional Engineering College will also be held at as a part of the 60-year celebrations.

Education is not meant to gain just knowledge but is also meant to help an individual to learn life skills, DCP (Crime and Traffic) Uma Prashanth said. She was delivering a talk at the Women in Technology summit, organised by IEEE Computer Society at NITK in Surathkal on Friday.

Also, NITK Deputy Director Ananthanarayana V S said MHRD had mandated to increase the female enrollment in all the centrally-funded educational institutions to 14% in 2018 and 17% in 2019 and 20% in 2020. The female students enrollment in the NITK has crossed 17% this year, he said and hoped to increase it to 25% to 30% in the coming years.

The National Institute of Technology, Surathkal, celebrated its 59th Foundation Day on 6 Aug 2018 in the presence of its Board of Governors chairman K. Balaveera Reddy and director K. Umamaheshwar Rao.

Dignitaries, staff and students paid tribute to the institute’s founder the late Ullal Srinivasa Mallya. Faculty and staff members who have completed 25 years of service were felicitated. Also children of the employees who excelled in their 10th and 12th standard board examinations were felicitated.

Prof. Reddy highlighted the contributions of visionaries and the founderProf. K.U. Rao focused on responsibilities of every stakeholder of the campus and the need for teamspirit in all activities to achieve greater heights.

The contribution of the alumni was highly applauded. The NITK Alumni Association has planned to construct an Alumni Centre of Excellence with state of the art infrastructure facilities at a cost of Rs. 25 crore to be completed by 2020 when the institute will be celebrating its Diamond Jubilee. The president of the association B.K. Krishnamurthy was felicitated on the occasion.

Two faculty from the National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, Surathkal, have been chosen for the Sir C.V. Raman Young Scientist Award, 2017 and Prof. Satish Dhawan Young Engineers Award, 2017, by the State government.

Arun Mohan Isloor, professor, Chemistry, and K. Vidya Shetty, professor, Chemical Engineering, received the Raman and Dhawan Awards respectively from Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy at Bengaluru on Monday in the presence of Minister for Science and Technology K.J. George and Principal Secretary to Government (Department of IT and BT) Gaurav Gupta.
