Tiwari College of Architecture focuses on developing professional skills of students and empowers them to make the most of their knowledge and realize their full potential for the growth of the society. The courses offered at the college aim to inculcate conceptual and analytical skills of students. With an approach that not only familiarizes students with real-world problems, but also trains them how to approach and solve them, the college is one-of- its-kind in the district. It aims at encouraging student-teacher interaction and enhancing individual student skills. The college has the best of faculty to ensure students are industry-ready and they fare well in their career in highly competitive environment. The belief that the college should have academicians and practitioners both as a part of the faculty underpins the college’s fundamental philosophy. On one hand practitioners bring with them knowledgeable industry insights and the art of decision-making to the class, while on the other hand, academicians teach students to tackle problems with a critical and analytical approach. This week for SKLT Dialogues, we are excited to welcome Pooja Khairnar, to lead our eleventh session: “Beyond Necessities''.
About the Speaker: Pooja Khairnar is an architect, designer and educator. As the founder of PK_iNCEPTiON, a multidisciplinary design studio, believes that architecture has a responsibility in betterment of life through creation of sensitive and impactful designs. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture from CANS, Nashik and a Master of
Architecture in Theory and Design from CEPT University, Ahmedabad.

IDEOLOGY
The ultimate existence of architecture can go beyond function and comfort. It can inspire people, though we always have limited time but buildings with meaning can change the world and we should not settle for anything less.
Space-making and organization should be able to move a person from within. It can begin with tangible aspects but should ultimately be perceived as an intangible experience. Architecture should grow and adapt to change, time, and need. It should be timeless. This can only be achieved with the manifestation of the ‘generic essence’.
The idea of a generic essence guides our approach, where every project becomes a challenge to uncover the rooted values embedded in context, users, and the unsaid brief. The goal is to discover its inherent "gene" before progressing toward its physical manifestation.
The studio engages in a continuous process of critical inquiry through the reading and understanding of concepts/ theories and their application in practice. This exploration aims to cultivate its own standpoint, one that informs and shapes meaningful and impactful expressions in the built environment.

SKLT_people - George
Architect, Educator, Associate Professor at SKLT.
George Jacob is an architect and urban designer. He is a partner and co-founder of aDRG, a Mumbai-based design practice. He is currently Associate Professor at SKLT College of Architecture and previously taught at Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies (KRVIA).

George was the Lead Urban Designer and Project Coordinator for the preparation of district-level master plans in Rwanda, leading projects for the districts of Rwamagana (2020), Bugesera (2022), and Kamonyi (2023). In 2018, he was awarded the UNESCO–Sahapedia Fellowship for his research documenting the architecture, engineering systems, and cultural practices associated with the khazans of Goa.

Through KRVIA’s Research and Development Cell, George has contributed to several significant research and design initiatives, including Navigating the Grid: Poverty, Gender and Access to Services in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (supported by UKRI), the Rural Studio Study with Tongji University, Turning Tables at the Venice Biennale, Mapping Privacy in Public Spaces (supported by the BMW Guggenheim Lab), the Cinemacity Project, and the Dharavi Redevelopment Project with MHADA, among others. He has also conducted workshops and presented research at numerous national and international conferences.

His ongoing work explores modes of representation in research and practice through collaborations with community groups. He is particularly interested in developing frameworks for environmental awareness, public engagement, and locally grounded interventions, with a focus on tier-two cities and their evolving urban landscapes.

This week for SKLT Dialogues, we are excited to welcome Minaz Ansari, to lead our tenth session: “Walking Cities, Writing Cities''.
About the speaker: MINAZ ANSARI is an architect, writer, educator and urban researcher with over
25 years of experience in practice, research, teaching and writing. She has been
a part of industry practice for over a decade and in academia for the last 16
years.

Minaz has authored books, and written for newspapers, publications and
academic journals. She pursues research and writing independently and conducts city walks as an advocacy tool for understanding issues around urbanisation.

Currently, Minaz is pursuing her PhD from Srishti Manipal Institute
of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore.

This week for SKLT Dialogues, we are excited to welcome Samidha Patil and Kareena Kochery, to lead our ninth session: “Learning to Design from Dharavi''.
About the Speaker:

Kareena Kochery is a Landscape planner, researcher and co-director of the urbz collective Mumbai. She specialises in Cultural geography, with a focus on animal geography. As a landscape planner, she is involved in advocacy for the ecological planning of river basins and is committed to working on community-led environmental planning projects.
She has worked closely with local communities, state and municipal officials and global organisations to develop interventions and frameworks sensitive to the interrelationality of urban culture, landscapes, built environments, ecology and economy. The immersive, participatory nature of her work has helped her develop skills and tools to bridge gaps between design-led and community-led planning, which remains an important goal for her.

Samidha Patil is an architect, urbanist and co-director of the urbz Collective Mumbai. She specialises in urban housing, equity and social justice. She brings in elements of participation in architectural projects to develop community-centric designs. For the past 10 years, she has worked with several communities, municipalities in India and international organisations globally.
Her work is at the intersection of urban planning, environment and governance. She has worked closely with state and municipal officials of multiple smart cities in India to develop urban-scale interventions and development frameworks related to urban mobility, housing, environment, ecology and economy. As an urban researcher, she works on several research projects, ranging from adequate housing for the urban poor to climate change to mobility.

A span is not merely a distance; it is a negotiation between force, material, and intent. The Sem 9 Tectonics Studio at SKLT explores various structural systems as responses to architectural intent and program requirements. Here, precedents become fragments to decode, not solutions to inherit. Allowing students to experiment with their underlying logic and empirical structural principles. Through repeated making and breaking, students understand tectonic possibilities firsthand, enabling them to devise systems and details at larger scales.

This week for SKLT Dialogues, we are excited to welcome Sheela Patel, to lead our eighth session: “Co-Production of Knowledge: The Value for Tertiary Education”
About the Speaker: Sheela Patel is the Director of SPARC, an NGO she founded in 1984, that has been working with two Community Based Organizations of the urban poor: National Slum Dwellers Federation and Mahila Milan, active in several cities across India.

She is widely recognised - nationally and internationally - for seeking urgent attention to the issues of urban poverty, housing and infrastructure onto the radar of governments, bilateral and international agencies, foundation and other organizations.

Sheela is a founder amongst many of Slum Dwellers International, a transnational social movement of the urban poor in Asia, Africa and Latin America. She was a Commissioner of the Commission for Adaptation to climate change between 2018-2020 and is currently a trustee of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Global Ambassador to Race to Zero and Race to Resilience, Member of the Club of Rome, and a board member of Climate-KIC.

She was awarded the 2023 Lawrence C Nussdorf Urban Leadership Prize by PennIUR. Since 2022 Sheela has been spearheading the Campaign for Roof Over Our Heads (ROOH) that is now part of the UN Race to Resilience (RtR) campaign.
