Post Graduate and Research Dept.of Economics Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla Department of Economics Mar Thoma College, thiruvalla Mar Thoma College was established in 1952 with intermediate programmes in Arts and Science.

The situation was very fluid in the context of attainment of independence and cry for the formation of the state of Kerala. The number of education institutions was very few and higher education was even a dream for people of central Travancore. The need for having a college in our region and also a graduation programme in Economics felt so intensively that the church ventured into a great and no

ble attempt by establishing the Mar Thoma College at Thiruvalla. Economics was one of the first programmes offered during the inception of the college. The Demand was so high that the college moved over to a post graduate programme in 1981 from under graduation and further to a research programme in economics in 1998. Till Now 57 batches of undergraduate and 34 batches of post graduate students passed out from the department. The department also produced 11 research holders.

The 29th Annual Lecture of the Department was held on 25th February 2026 at the College Seminar Hall. Principal Dr. Mathew Varkey T K presided over the meeting. Dr. Deepak Johnson K, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru delivered the lecture on the topic ' Tracing Profitability in Indian Agriculture: Evidence from Multiple Data Sources'. Dr. Icy K John, former Principal of the College, was the moderator. During the programme, the Department also honored Dr. Anishkumar P.T., Dr. Aloshious Xavier, and Ms. Meenu S. for their academic achievements.

29th Annual Lecture

Dear sir/madam/students,

The Postgraduate and Research Department of Economics, Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla has reached yet another milestone in its journey. The Annual Lecture, the prestigious academic event of the Department is in its 29th year. The Department has been conducting this event continously since 1998, when the Department got recognized as a Research Centre of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

The previous lectures were delivered by eminent scholars in Economics both from within India and abroad.

The 29th Annual Lecture will be delivered by Dr.Deepak Johnson K, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru. Topic for the lecture is Tracing Profitability in Indian Agriculture: Evidence from Multiple Data Sources.

The lecture will be held at 10.30 am on Wednesday, 25th February 2026 at College Seminar Hall.

Dr. Icy K John, Former Principal, Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla will be the moderator.
