Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) at IIST, in association with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and IISER Thiruvananthapuram, organised a two-hour programme on Basic Life Support (BLS) on 14 October 2026 at the Seminar Hall, Aerospace Building, IIST. Dr Hemalatha, Chief Medical Officer, and Ms Parvathy, UBA Coordinator at IISER Thiruvananthapuram, accompanied a team of doctors and paramedical staff from Loka Medicity to conduct the practical session and demonstrate essential Basic Life Support techniques. The team was received by the UBA team at IIST, and the programme commenced at 2:00 p.m. Around 80 participants, including students, staff, officers, and faculty members, attended the programme. Dr Gigy J. Alex, UBA Coordinator at IIST, delivered the welcome address. Prof. Kuruvilla Joseph, Pro Vice Chancellor, Chairman, UBA@IIST, presided over the session and Dr Hemlatha highlighted the importance of Basic Life Support training and its relevance in emergency situations.
Dr Nidhin and Dr Sreeju led the technical session, combining explanations with practical demonstrations. The topics covered included cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), chest compressions for adults and infants, first aid for choking, and emergency response to snake bites.
The session was interactive, providing participants with opportunities to observe the demonstrations, clarify their doubts, and engage with the resource persons. A question-and-answer session was also conducted at the end, enabling participants to seek further clarification on the techniques demonstrated. Ms Ananthaleshmi delivered the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to the resource persons, collaborating institutions, organisers, and participants for their contributions to the successful conduct of the programme.
The programme concluded at 4:15 p.m., followed by refreshments. The session served as a valuable awareness and training initiative, emphasising the importance of basic emergency response skills and equipping participants with essential knowledge to respond more effectively to medical emergencies.
