Roots & Roads Heritage Tours, curated by Pallikonam Rajeev, recently visited the Pattanam Archaeological Site as part of their Muziris Heritage Tour. The participants explored the archaeological site, learned about the excavated artefacts, and experienced the cultural landscape of Pattanam, gaining valuable insights into the region's rich maritime heritage and its significant role in the Indian Ocean trade network.
We extend our sincere thanks to Roots & Roads Heritage Tours and all the participants for their enthusiastic engagement with Pattanam's archaeological heritage.

Sharing a few moments from the internship programme at the KCHR Pattanam Campus, conducted as part of the development of the Pattanam Archaeological Museum.

Students from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS), Kalady, and the Regional Centre, Tirur, are actively participating in various activities associated with the museum project, gaining hands-on experience in archaeological research, heritage documentation, and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the past. The programme provides opportunities for practical learning, field engagement, and academic interaction, contributing to a deeper understanding of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.

KCHR thanks the students for their enthusiastic participation and wishes them success in their studies and future research activities.

കേരളത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള സമകാലിക പഠനങ്ങൾ
(Contemporary Studies on Kerala)
രാഷ്ട്രീയം, തൊഴിൽ, കുടിയേറ്റം, ജാതി, മതം, പൊതുസംസ്കാരം എന്നിവയിലുണ്ടായ മാറ്റങ്ങൾ കേരളത്തിന്റെ ആധുനിക ചരിത്രത്തെ ആഴത്തിൽ സ്വാധീനിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. തൊഴിലാളി പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ, ഭൂപരിഷ്കരണങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ മുതൽ കുടിയേറ്റം, സഹകരണ സംരംഭങ്ങൾ, സാംസ്കാരിക പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ വരെയുള്ള ഘടകങ്ങൾ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ സാമൂഹികവും രാഷ്ട്രീയവുമായ വികാസത്തിൽ നിർണായക പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
വഴക്കമുള്ള തൊഴിൽ വ്യവസ്ഥകൾ (flexible labour regimes), കുടിയേറ്റ നഗരവൽക്കരണം, മാറിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന സമുദായ സ്വത്വങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള സമകാലിക വെല്ലുവിളികളെയും ചരിത്രപരമായ വഴികളെയും വിമർശനാത്മകമായി വിലയിരുത്തേണ്ടതിന്റെ ആവശ്യകത തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ്, കേരള കൗൺസിൽ ഫോർ ഹിസ്റ്റോറിക്കൽ റിസർച്ച് (KCHR) "കേരളത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള സമകാലിക പഠനങ്ങൾ" (Contemporary Studies on Kerala) എന്ന പേരിൽ ഒരു ശില്പശാല സംഘടിപ്പിച്ചു.
രാഷ്ട്രീയ പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ, തൊഴിൽ, കുടിയേറ്റം, ജാതി, മതം, സാംസ്കാരിക മാറ്റങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രധാന വിഷയങ്ങളിൽ വിവിധ ശാസ്ത്രശാഖകൾ തമ്മിലുള്ള സംവാദം പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനായി വിവിധ മേഖലകളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഗവേഷകരെ ഈ ശില്പശാല ഒരുമിച്ച് കൊണ്ടുവന്നു. സജീവമായ ചർച്ചകളിലൂടെയും അക്കാദമിക ആശയവിനിമയങ്ങളിലൂടെയും പങ്കെടുത്തവർ സമകാലിക കേരളത്തിന്റെ സങ്കീർണ്ണതകളെക്കുറിച്ച് പഠിക്കുകയും ഗവേഷണത്തിനായുള്ള പുതിയ ദിശാസൂചനകൾ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഈ സംരംഭത്തിന്റെ സുപ്രധാനമായ ഒരു ഫലമെന്ന നിലയിൽ, ശില്പശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത പ്രബന്ധങ്ങൾ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കാൻ ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നു. ഇത് സമകാലിക കേരള സമൂഹത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ആഴത്തിലുള്ള ധാരണയ്ക്കും വിമർശനാത്മക പഠനങ്ങൾക്കും സംഭാവന നൽകും.

ഷെറിൻ രത്നാകർ (1944–2026)
കെ സി എച്ച് ആറിന്റെ പുരാവസ്തു ഉപദേശക സമിതി അംഗവും പ്രമുഖ പുരാവസ്തു ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞയുമായ ഷെറിൻ രത്നാകറിന്റെ (1944–2026) വിയോഗം പുരാവസ്തു ശാസ്ത്രം, ചരിത്രം, വിജ്ഞാന മേഖലകൾ എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് നികത്താനാവാത്ത നഷ്ടമാണ്. സിന്ധുനദീതട സംസ്കാരത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ആഴത്തിലുള്ള അറിവുള്ള ഇന്ത്യയിലെ പ്രമുഖ പണ്ഡിതരിൽ ഒരാളായിരുന്ന അവർ, തന്റെ ജീവിതം ഹാരപ്പൻ ലോകത്തെ ശാസ്ത്രീയ തെളിവുകളിലൂടെ മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നതിനായി സമർപ്പിച്ചു.
1944-ൽ മുംബൈയിൽ ജനിച്ച രത്‌നഗർ പൂനെയിലെ ഡെക്കാൻ കോളേജിലും തുടർന്ന് ലണ്ടൻ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിലെ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ആർക്കിയോളജിയിലുമായി പഠനം പൂർത്തിയാക്കി. ഹാരപ്പൻ പുരാവസ്തു പഠനത്തിൽ പ്രത്യേക വൈദഗ്ധ്യം നേടിയ അവർ പിന്നീട് ജവഹർലാൽ നെഹ്‌റു സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ പുരാവസ്തു ശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും പുരാതന ചരിത്രത്തിലും പ്രൊഫസറായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. തന്റെ മൂർച്ചയുള്ള ബുദ്ധിവൈഭവം കൊണ്ടും വിട്ടുവീഴ്ചയില്ലാത്ത പാണ്ഡിത്യം കൊണ്ടും തലമുറകളോളം വരുന്ന വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്കും ഗവേഷകർക്കും അവർ പ്രചോദനമായി.
ഹാരപ്പൻ സംസ്കാരത്തിലെ വ്യാപാരം, നഗരവൽക്കരണം, രാഷ്ട്രീയ സംവിധാനങ്ങൾ, സാമൂഹിക ഘടന എന്നിവയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അവരുടെ പഠനങ്ങൾ ആ മേഖലയിൽ പുതിയ ദിശാബോധം കൊണ്ടുവന്നു. Encounters: The Westerly Trade of the Harappa Civilization, Understanding Harappa തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രശസ്തമായ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളിലൂടെ സിന്ധുനദീതടവും മെസൊപ്പൊട്ടേമിയയും തമ്മിലുള്ള പുരാതന ബന്ധങ്ങളെ അവർ വെളിച്ചത്തുകൊണ്ടുവരികയും ചരിത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ലളിതമായ വിവരണങ്ങളെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഒരു intellectual എന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള രത്നാകറിന്റെ ധീരത ഏറെ പ്രശംസിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. തെളിവുകളെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയുള്ള ചരിത്രരചനയ്ക്കായി അവർ നിലകൊള്ളുകയും, പ്രത്യയശാസ്ത്രപരമായ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങൾക്കായി പുരാവസ്തു ശാസ്ത്രത്തെ ദുരുപയോഗം ചെയ്യുന്നതിനെതിരെ നിരന്തരം ശബ്ദമുയർത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. അക്കാദമിക് ചർച്ചകളിലും പൊതുവേദികളിലും അവരുടെ ശബ്ദം എന്നും വ്യക്തവും വിമർശനാത്മകവും മാനുഷികവുമായിരുന്നു.
സഹപ്രവർത്തകരും വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും വായനക്കാരും അവരെ ഓർക്കുന്നത് ഒരു വിശിഷ്ട പുരാവസ്തു ഗവേഷകയായി മാത്രമല്ല, മറിച്ച് ജിജ്ഞാസയും നർമ്മബോധവും സത്യസന്ധതയും കൊണ്ട് നിരവധി ചിന്തകളെ രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയ അസാമാന്യയായ ഒരു അധ്യാപിക കൂടിയായാണ്. ദക്ഷിണേഷ്യയുടെ പുരാതന ചരിത്രത്തെ ശാസ്ത്രീയമായും തുറന്ന മനസ്സോടെയും മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന വരുംതലമുറകൾക്ക് അവരുടെ പഠനങ്ങൾ എന്നും ഒരു ഉറച്ച അടിത്തറയായിരിക്കും.
അല്പകാലത്തെ അസുഖത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് 2026 മെയ് 25-ന് 82-ാം വയസ്സിൽ മുംബൈയിൽ വെച്ചായിരുന്നു ഷെറിൻ രത്നാകറിന്റെ അന്ത്യം. അവരുടെ വിയോഗം ഇന്ത്യൻ പുരാവസ്തു ശാസ്ത്രത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന അധ്യായത്തിന് വിരാമമിടുന്നുവെങ്കിലും, അവരുടെ ആശയങ്ങളും എഴുത്തുകളും വരുംകാലങ്ങളിലും പണ്ഡിതന്മാർക്ക് വഴികാട്ടിയാവുകയും അവരെ വെല്ലുവിളിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കും.

Activities at the Pattanam Archaeological Site witnessed enthusiastic participation from the young generation.

Students from Kesari Vayanashala Pooyyappalli, a locality closely connected to the Pattanam region, visited the site and actively engaged in heritage learning by observing museum-related activities. Their participation reflects the growing involvement of nearby communities in understanding and preserving local history.

The children interacted with internship participants, engaged in discussions on archaeology, and explored how archaeological materials are studied, documented, and preserved. Such interactions play an important role in inspiring the next generation to connect with cultural heritage and archaeological research.

These moments reflect meaningful exchanges between students, interns, and researchers, highlighting archaeological spaces as living centres of learning, interaction, and public engagement.

The internship programme under the FYUGP initiative of UGC continues at the Kerala Council for Historical Research with active student participation and academic engagement.

We are pleased to share that the next batch of interns from Alphonsa College, Pala and Little Flower College, Guruvayur has successfully completed their internship at the KCHR Pattanam Campus.

As part of the Museum Ex*****on Initiative, the interns engaged in archaeological research activities, material studies, heritage documentation, and exhibition-related learning experiences. Working alongside the KCHR team, the students gained hands-on exposure to museum development processes and interdisciplinary research practices, making the internship a meaningful academic journey.
