The Department of Paediatric Surgery, KMC Manipal had an Alumni Meet at the recently held state conference - Pesucon2024 on the 23rd and 24th of August.

KMC Manipal was one of the earliest to start the Paediatric Surgery MCh program in the state and our graduates are now flourishing all over the world and India with many of them heading their respective departments now.

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, KMC Manipal, conducted the Manipal FESS Workshop along with the Manipal ENT Alumni Meet from the 16th to 18th of May 2024. On 16th and 17th of May, Hands-on Cadaveric Dissection Sessions were held for delegates, under the guidance of several well known alumni faculty members. Several alumni members delivered talks during the CME and workshop, held at the Department of Anatomy, KMC Manipal. The alumni programme and fellowship dinner was attended by over 70 alumni members.

On the morning of 18th May, the Inaugural Programme was held at the Luminaire Hall at Fortune Inn Valley View, which was graced by Lt. Gen. (Dr.) MD Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor – MAHE, Dr. Sharath Rao, Pro Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences – MAHE, Dr. Padmaraj Hegde, Dean of KMC Manipal, and Dr. Rohit Singh, Director of Alumni Affairs – MAHE. During the inauguration, several prominent alumni were felicitated – Dr. Produl Hazarika, Dr. PSN Murthy, Dr. Dipak Ranjan Nayak, Dr. V. Anand, Dr. Deepak Murty, and Dr. George Varghese.

The inauguration was followed by the 7th Manipal ENT Oration, which was delivered by ENT alumni, Dr. Ravi Ramalingam, Senior consultant and Managing Director of the KKR Group of ENT Hospitals and Clinics in Chennai. He is also the current President of the Indian Society of Otology. Dr. Ramalingam delivered an engaging oration on his experiences in Middle Ear Surgery. The oration was then followed by informal interactions among the alumni with lunch at Fortune Inn Valley View.

The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) mourns the loss of Professor Marthanda Varma Sankaran Valiathan, a distinguished cardiac surgeon and esteemed academic, who passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 9:14 PM in Manipal at the age of 90.

At Manipal Professor Valiathan served as the first Vice-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) from 1993. His tenure at MAHE was marked by a commitment to academic excellence and innovation in research. Under his leadership, MAHE expanded its academic programs and significantly increased its research output, establishing itself as a leader in higher education. He was instrumental in fostering an environment that encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration and international partnerships, enhancing the global reputation of the institution. His vision and dedication were key in transforming MAHE into a world-class university, attracting students and faculty from around the globe and securing its place among the top educational institutions in India and worldwide.

Professor Valiathan received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Padma Vibhushan (2005), the Padma Shri (2002), the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award, the Hunterian Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Chevalier of the Order of Palmes Académiques from the French Government, the Dr. Samuel P. Asper Award for International Medical Education from Johns Hopkins University, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Medical Association.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy of excellence and dedication to medical science and education will continue to inspire us all.

The Department of Psychiatry, KMC, Manipal held its Golden Jubilee Celebrations on the 13th and 14th of April, 2024. Having been established in the year 1974 by the late Prof R L Kapur, the department has had an illustrious 50 years. Several well-known names in the field of mental health have been faculty here. Our trainees in Psychiatry, Psychiatric Social Work and Psychology are placed in prestigious institutes across the globe and several hold the position of adjunct faculty here. The department also has several awards and publications to its credit.

The programme was attended by a large number of alumni, both from India and overseas and several alumni faculty. Professor Malavika Kapur, who has seen the beginning of the department and was the first clinical Psychology faculty here, also graced the occasion.

The alumni meet began with a brief visit to the new academic block for Psychiatry, that has been partially funded by the alumni themselves, with the help of a matching grant from MAHE. Dr Sharath Rao, Pro VC Life Sciences, addressed all the alumni and appreciated their contributions to their alma mater.

Following this, a brief formal inaugural programme was held at the Luminaire Hall in Valley View, which was graced by Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, MAHE, Dr Padmaraj Hege, Dean, KMC, Manipal and Dr Rohit Singh, Director, Alumni Relations.

The rest of the day was spent in informal interactions with all the alumni, a campus tour and a banquet in the evening. The next day, these interactions were continued at a brunch organized at the MAHE guest house at Thottam.

The entire programme was well organized and much appreciated by the attendees. The untiring efforts of the department to keep in touch with both its post graduate and faculty alumni have been paid off, as shown by their enthusiastic participation in celebrating this important milestone in the history of the department.
