Department of Chemistry, Sardar Patel University Post Graduate department of chemistry was established in 1958 and has evolved itself into a well known and reputed academic research centre.

The department offers M.Sc. programme in Organic chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Physical chemistry, Analytical chemistry and Industrial polymer chemistry. The department has won several recognitions at national level and successfully completed four phases of UGC-SAP, one phase each of UGC COSIST and DST-FIST programs. SAP is intended through constant efforts to raise the quality of teaching/resea

rch in different disciplines in the universities. The department has been identified as a nodal centre for successfully running UGC Center of Excellence in Applied Polymers (CEAP). This award is the crown in its glory as it is one of the 12 such centers across the entire country identified by UGC. The DST has approved the department for continuation from DST-FIST-1 to DST-FIST-2 and UGC from DSA-IV to Centre of Advanced Study in Chemistry (CAS-I) programme for a further five years. The expert committee has identified certain trust areas for a research and teaching including synthesis of polymers especially for optoelectronic materials and drug delivery systems, metal based drug intermediates and synthesis of bio-active molecules via development of modern organic synthetic method. The faculty has been undertaking research projects sponsored by various national agencies such as UGC, DST, CSIR, BRNS, and IUC-DAEF etc. The department of chemistry is known for its efficient and hard working faculty and excellent research facility. The research work involves the probing various aspects of polymers including synthesis, characterization and applications, synthetic organic chemistry, surfactant and non-electrolyte chemistry, bioactive inorganic metal complexes and theoretical chemistry etc. The department houses various sophisticated equipment such as 1H and 13C NMR, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, FT-IR, Tensile Testing Machine, DMA, Simultaneous TGA and DTA, DSC, AFM, High Temperature GPC, Static Light Scattering, VSM and several equipments for polymer testing analysis.
