"Arabic Language: A Global Bridge for Culture and Knowledge - Banaras Hindu University Celebrates World Arabic Language Day"

The Department of Arabic, Faculty of Arts, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, organized an inspiring online event to commemorate World Arabic Language Day 2024. The program was presided over by Prof. Mujeebur Rahman, Head, Department of Arabic, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The session was conducted by Dr. Quamer Shaban, Assistant Professor, Department of Arabic, BHU.
The event featured Dr. Ali Abdulaziz Aljubailan, Professor of Linguistics at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as the Chief Guest. In his keynote address, Dr. Aljubailan highlighted the evolution of Arabic grammar, its linguistic significance, and the collaborative efforts of Arabs and non-Arabs in enriching the language. He emphasized the global stature of Arabic, which serves as an official language for numerous regional and international organizations, including the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. He further asserted that Arabic, with its rich literary and communicative versatility, possesses the potential to emerge as a global language in the era of globalization.
Prof. Mujeebur Rahman, in his presidential address, remarked, “Arabic is not just a language of religion but a repository of knowledge and culture. It transcends regional boundaries, uniting enthusiasts and scholars worldwide. Its role as a language of diplomacy, literature, and cultural exchange remains unparalleled.”
Other notable speakers included Dr. Muzaffar Alam, former Dean, School of Arab Studies, EFL University, Hyderabad, who reflected on the challenges and prospects of Arabic in the modern era, and Dr. Ishrat Ali Mulla, former Head, Department of Arabic and Persian, University of Calcutta, who emphasized Arabic’s academic, diplomatic, and communicative significance on a global scale.
Research scholars from BHU, Ahmed Raza and Shakir Hussain, presented thought-provoking papers on the relevance and necessity of Arabic language and literature in today’s world.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Md. Raihan, Assistant Professor, Department of Arabic, BHU, expressing gratitude to all the dignitaries, participants, and attendees.
The program witnessed active participation from prominent scholars, including Dr. Anzar Nadvi, Dr. Thama Faisal, Dr. Mahmood Abdulrab Mirza, Dr. Shamim Nizami, Dr. Raisuddin, and Dr. Jaber, making it a memorable and intellectually enriching occasion.
The Department of Arabic at BHU reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the Arabic language as a bridge of cultural and intellectual exchange, showcasing its relevance and potential as a universal medium of communication.
