Soliloquies of Dental Undergraduate Students on Career Pathways After Graduation
A Year of the Student Initiative @ CIDS
Introduction
As part of the Year of the Student initiative at Coorg Institute of Dental Sciences (CIDS), we engaged in meaningful conversations with our undergraduate dental students to understand their perceived career options after graduation. These interactions revealed a diverse landscape of aspirations that extends well beyond traditional clinical practice, offering valuable insights for curriculum planning and student mentorship programs.
Key Findings
Our conversations with students revealed the following career preferences:
• Clinical Practice remains the most popular option with approximately 60% of students expressing interest (40% after postgraduate specialization + 20% immediately after BDS)
• Armed Forces emerged as the second major aspiration with around 20% of students considering this pathway
• Health Administration attracted approximately 10% of students interested in system-level healthcare impact
• Civil Services appealed to 5% of students wanting to serve beyond the dental chair
• Undecided category comprised 5% of students still exploring their options
Career Pathway Analysis
Clinical Practice (60%)
Clinical practice continues to be the dominant career choice among dental undergraduates, with a significant majority planning to enter clinical work either immediately after BDS or following postgraduate specialization. This pathway typically requires:
• Strong clinical skill development during undergraduate training
• Internship and observership opportunities
• Practice management and business acumen
• Patient communication and ethical marketing skills
• Understanding of clinic setup and financial planning
Armed Forces (20%)
A substantial proportion of students expressed interest in serving the nation through the armed forces. Entry into dental services typically occurs through the Army Dental Corps Short Service Commission & Students will be coached for this
Health Administration (10%)
Students interested in health administration seek to impact healthcare at the systems level rather than individual patient care. This emerging pathway often involves:
• Additional qualifications such as MPH, MHA, or MBAUnderstanding of healthcare policy and leadership
• Data literacy and project management skills
• Knowledge of accreditation standards (NABH, etc.)
Civil Services (5%)
• A small but significant group of students aspire to broader public service through civil services examinations, seeking to influence healthcare policy and adminis
• Exposure to hospital management and quality systems
tration at governmental levels.
Undecided (5%)
Five percent of students remain undecided about their career pathway, which represents a natural period of exploration during undergraduate education.
Institutional Response
The institution will explore means of training each student according to his or her area of interest through:
1. Track-wise Mentorship Programs: Establishing dedicated mentorship pathways for clinical practice, armed forces, health administration, civil services, and exploration tracks
2. Skill-Building Modules: Developing targeted skill modules relevant to each career pathway
3. Career Counseling: Providing aptitude mapping and career guidance services
4. Alumni Networks: Connecting students with alumni who have pursued similar pathways
5. Exposure Opportunities: Creating micro-rotations and taster sessions across different career options
6. Resource Centers: Establishing information hubs with pathway-specific resources and guidance materials
Conclusion
The Year of the Student initiative at CIDS has revealed that while clinical practice remains the predominant career choice, today's dental undergraduates envision a diverse range of professional pathways. This insight enables the institution to move beyond one-size-fits-all training toward personalized, track-wise preparation that empowers each graduate to walk out not just with a degree, but with direction and readiness for their chosen career path.
The diversity of career aspirations reflects the evolving landscape of dental education and the broadening opportunities available to BDS graduates in contemporary India. By acknowledging and supporting these varied aspirations, CIDS demonstrates its commitment to holistic student development and career preparedness.
