Applications of AI/ML | Building AI-Ready Government Capacity

From identifying fraudulent activities involving railway tickets to applications in defence, law enforcement, workforce optimisation, and data-driven governance, AI/ML is creating new possibilities across the public sector.

33 government officials from diverse departments and ministries came together at IIM Visakhapatnam for a two-day Capacity Building Programme on Applications of AI/ML, conducted under the aegis of the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.

The cohort represents organisations including the Ministry of Railways, Department of Defence, UIDAI, Department of Space, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Earth Sciences, and various other government departments.

Led by Prof. Neena Pandey and Prof. Rishi Raj, programme covers Foundations of AI/ML, AI/ML Tools and Techniques, AI Applications in Government, AI Strategy and Governance, and AI Laws and Ethics. It provides a platform for government officials to deepen their understanding of emerging technologies and explore how AI/ML can be applied responsibly to strengthen governance and create greater public value.

Visiting Scholars at IIM Visakhapatnam | Fostering Global Academic Exchange

IIM Visakhapatnam hosted Mr. Samson Okegbemi (Economics) and Ms. Ruth Okhah (Digital Financial Inclusion), Visiting Scholars from Keele University, for a 15-day academic engagement at the Institute from August 3 to 17, 2026.

During their stay, the scholars participated in a range of academic and research activities, including econometrics workshops, research writing, case teaching and writing, field experiments, research presentations, interactions with faculty and scholars, experience-sharing sessions, and social immersion.

The scholars also had the opportunity to engage in meaningful interactions with the Director, faculty members, and IIMV PhD scholars, facilitating valuable exchanges of research perspectives and academic experiences. IIM Visakhapatnam hosted a dinner gala for its PhD scholars. The evening provided an engaging platform for insightful discussions, experience-sharing, and networking among faculty and scholars.

The visit culminated on August 17 with a certificate distribution ceremony, where the scholars received their certificates from Prof. M. Chandrasekhar, Director, IIM Visakhapatnam, marking the successful completion of their academic engagement at the Institute.

IIM Visakhapatnam Signs MoU with The University of Western Australia

IIM Visakhapatnam is pleased to announce a new MoU with The University of Western Australia (UWA), ranked 77th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and the highest-ranked university in Western Australia. As an Institute of National Importance, the partnership strengthens IIM Visakhapatnam’s commitment to global academic and research collaboration.

Representing IIM Visakhapatnam, Prof. Vijaya Bhaskar Marisetty, Dean (Academics), signed the MoU with Prof. Jennifer Howell, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement), The University of Western Australia, at the JW Marriott Hotel, Mumbai, in the presence of Prof. Amit Chakma, Vice-Chancellor, UWA.

The MoU will facilitate collaboration in joint research activities, joint conferences, faculty and student exchanges, and collaborative academic programmes, creating opportunities for knowledge sharing and deeper academic engagement between the two institutions. Special focus will be placed on programmes and research connected to the future of energy management.

This partnership further strengthens IIM Visakhapatnam’s commitment to global academic engagement and excellence. With AACSB membership and BGA accreditation, IIM Visakhapatnam continues to expand its international academic partnerships and create avenues for meaningful collaboration across borders.

5th Batch of Mid-Career Management Development Programme for ICMR Concludes

The 5th Batch of the Mid-Career Management Development Programme under the aegis of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) concluded, marking the culmination of an enriching two-week learning journey for senior scientists at IIM Visakhapatnam.

The valedictory session began with a welcome address by Prof. Prashant Premkumar Nair, Programme Director, IIMV, who reflected on the participants’ learning journey.

Shri Jagdish Rajesh, DDG (Administration), ICMR, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his valedictory address, he noted that while the participants possess strong scientific expertise, the programme was designed to strengthen their management and leadership capabilities. He emphasised the importance of humility in effective leadership, particularly as professionals take on greater responsibilities. He also appreciated IIM Visakhapatnam and acknowledged Dr. R. Lakshminarayanan for conceptualising the programme.

During the experience-sharing session, participants reflected on how sessions led by faculty from IIM Visakhapatnam and ICMR helped them translate management concepts into their day-to-day professional responsibilities. They particularly highlighted the practical and technical insights gained through the programme.

The programme concluded with closing remarks by Prof. Kaveri Krishnan, Programme Director, IIMV, who thanked all stakeholders for their contributions to the successful conduct of the programme.

We are pleased to share that a research paper co-authored by PhD Scholar Mr. Abhay Singh and Prof. Aalok Kumar, titled “Transforming Small and Marginal Farmers’ Livelihoods through Agricultural Digital Platforms and Supply Chain Integration,” has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Enterprise Information Management (ABDC: A).

The study explores how agricultural digital platforms and supply chain integration can contribute to transforming the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers. The research offers insights into the role of digital technologies and integrated supply chains in improving access, connectivity, and opportunities within the agricultural ecosystem.

IIMV for Impact | Knowledge in Service of Development

At IIM Visakhapatnam, impact extends beyond the classroom into districts, institutions, enterprises, and communities.

Prof. M. Chandrasekhar, Director, IIM Visakhapatnam, and Prof. Vijaya Bhaskar Marisetty, Dean (Academics), recently called on Dr. R. Balasubramaniam, Member, NITI Aayog, and shared insights into the Institute’s growing contribution to development and institution-building in Andhra Pradesh.

A key area of engagement has been IIMV’s contribution to the Aspirational District as a Fulcrum of Growth initiative in Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) District, supporting locally anchored and evidence-based development.

Beyond this, IIMV’s impact extends across the state through strategic engagements with the Andhra Pradesh State Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society Limited (APCO), Andhra Pradesh State Financial Corporation Limited (APSFC), Andhra Pradesh Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Corporation (APMSME DC), and Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (APHDC).

These engagements span strategic business improvement, human resource assessment and organisational structuring, impact assessment of the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) Programme, development of a Product Perfection Framework for Andhra Pradesh, and strategic assessment of business operations and future roadmaps.

Through research, consulting, capacity building, and policy engagement, IIM Visakhapatnam continues to translate knowledge into action and action into meaningful impact.

Honouring a Legacy. Inspiring the Future.

IIM Visakhapatnam commemorated the birth anniversary of Late Ms. Vani Row through the annual Vani Row Memorial Lecture, celebrating her enduring legacy of leadership, excellence, and service.

In his address, Prof. M. Chandrasekhar, Director, IIM Visakhapatnam, reflected on how the vision of the Vani Row Memorial Incubation Centre, made possible through the generous endowment of Dr. B. R. L. Row, distinguished scientist, philanthropist, and father of Late Ms. Vani Row, has grown into a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. Today, through the Institute's incubation initiatives, including the Vani Row Memorial Incubation Centre, IIMV FIELD, and the Atal Incubation Centre, more than 209 startups, nearly 75% women-led, have been nurtured, creating lasting social and economic impact.

The programme also featured a special segment where recipients of the Vani Row Memorial Gold Medal (2020–2026) shared how the honour has shaped their academic and professional journeys. On behalf of Dr. B. R. L. Row, Ms. Sunitha reflected on Ms. Vani Row's inspiring life and conveyed his joy in seeing her legacy continue to encourage and empower young women to pursue excellence in management education, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

The Vani Row Memorial Lecture was delivered by Prof. Aparajita Ojha, Professor and Former Director, PDPM Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM), Jabalpur, who spoke on the transformative role of women in leadership, innovation, and nation-building, drawing inspiration from pioneering women whose contributions have shaped science and society.

As IIM Visakhapatnam continues to nurture responsible leaders and entrepreneurs, the life of Late Ms. Vani Row remains a powerful reminder that a single vision, supported by generosity and purpose, can inspire generations.

Building a Future-Ready Defence Manufacturing Ecosystem

The Modular MBA Programme for the Defence Sector at IIM Visakhapatnam hosted a Distinguished Lecture by Shri Vijaykumar Iyer, CMD, Yantra India Limited, on the topic "Emerging Trends in Defence Manufacturing."

The session highlighted the importance of Atmanirbhar Bharat and explored how emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Industry 4.0, robotics, automation, and additive manufacturing are shaping the future of India's defence manufacturing sector. The lecture also underscored the importance of indigenous manufacturing and innovation, sustainable practices, and collaboration among defence PSUs, private industry, academia, and research institutions in building a self-reliant and future-ready defence ecosystem.

Prof. B. Srirangacharyulu, Programme Chair, shared insights into the unique structure of the Modular MBA Programme, highlighting its immersive learning approach, with the first year leading to a Diploma and the second-year culminating in an MBA.

Conducted under the guidance of the Department of Defence Production (DDP), Ministry of Defence, and in knowledge partnership with HAL Management Academy, BEL Academy for Excellence (Nalanda), and the National Academy of Defence Production (NADP), the programme is designed to develop leadership and managerial capabilities that foster innovation and strengthen India's strategic edge in defence production.
