विश्वविद्यालय के अधिनियम की धारा 4 में उल्लिखित विश्वविद्यालय के उद्देश्यों में बताया गया है कि विश्वविद्यालय का उद्देश्य - दूरस्थ शिक्षा पद्धति के माध्यम से हिन्दी को लोकप्रिय बनाना होगा'। साथ ही धारा 5 के उपबन्ध (5) के अन्तर्गत विश्वविद्यालय को प्रदत्त शक्तियों में यह बताया गया है कि दूरस्थ शिक्षा के माध्यम से उन व्यक्तियों को जिनके बारे में वह निर्धारित करे, सुविधाएँ प्रदान करना है'|

ूमि के आलोक में 15 जून, 2007 को महात्मा गांधी अन्तरराष्ट्रीय हिन्दी विश्वविद्यालय के दूरस्थ शिक्षा कार्यक्रम का उदघाटन भारत के राष्ट्रपति महामहिम डॉ. ए.पी.जे. अब्दुल कलाम द्वारा किया गया।

महात्मा गांधी अन्तरराष्ट्रीय हिन्दी विश्वविद्यालय का दूरस्थ शिक्षा केन्द्र वर्तमान शिक्षा व्यवस्था के लिए विकल्प उपस्थित करने, हिन्दी में मौलिक सोच एवं अनुसंधान, समाज के हर तबके विशेष तौर पर शिक्षा से वंचित तबकों के लिए उच्च शिक्षा तक पहुँच आसान बनाने हेतु ज्ञान के नवीनतम अनुशासनों की हिन्दी भाषा के माध्यम से मौलिक प्रस्तुति एवं नवीनतम तकनीकों का प्रयोग करते हुए दूरस्थ शिक्षा कार्यक्रमों के हिन्दी माध्यम से प्रचार-प्रसार को सुनिश्चित करेगा।
