Shirodhara has been used for over 5,000 years in Ayurvedic therapy for a compromised nervous system. Sanskrit words “shiras” means head and “dhara” means uninterrupted flow. Shirodhara is the gentle, constant application of warm oil or medicated decoction on the third eye or ‘Ajna marma’, an area where nerves are highly concentrated, just above and between the eyebrows.

When the dravya is being gently poured on your forehead, it induces a deep state of relaxation, calms the nervous system, and stimulates the endocrine system (pituitary gland). Patra Pinda Sweda (Elakizhi)

A form of swedana which is included under the category of Pinda Sweda (bolus fomentation). In this procedure we use heated or oil fried leaves of medicinal plants tied in a bolus to provide heat to the pain afflicted joints or body parts, especially in diseases like Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lumbar spondylosis, Cervical spondylosis, Musculoskeletal pains, Myalgia etc.

Vata alleviating / pain relieving herbs are collected and sliced into small pieces. Ex. Leaves of Eranda (Ricinus communis – castor plant), Nigundi (Vitex nigundo), Arka (Calotropis gigantean), etc are sliced.

Lemon, coconut gratings, Rasnadi Churna, Haridra (Turmeric powder), Methika (fenugreek), Saindhava Lavana (rock salt), Eranda Taila (castor oil) etc are other ingredients for patra pinda sweda
