The University of Birjand was established in 1975 as an institute of higher education after the ratification of the 102nd session of the Council for Expansion of Higher Education in the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. In 1991, the Higher Education Institute was upgraded and renamed as the University of Birjand. After the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the University collaborated
actively with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology for running the higher education programs in accordance with the principles set by the Cultural Revolution Committee for Universities. Furthermore, to move alongside with the Regional and Global Development Programs in the region, the university went through a series of reforms in education and research policies which put forward a new era in its activities.
