Ciao! I’m Hillary Rome and I’m in charge of part of tonight’s instagram takeover! There’s a lot to follow because the night entailed so much… Let me firstly explain our farewell dinner. The JSB farewell dinner is an long standing tradition. It’s an opportunity for the students to thank the community of Ariccia for welcoming and taking care of us so graciously. We firstly served our local Ariccians a Southern Style Barbecue to show them what we are going home to! This consisted of Mac and Cheese, Barbecue chicken wings, green beans, corn on the cob, pimento cheese, cowboy caviar, a “Jennifer Anniston” salad, and not to mention, an entire table full of desserts. We were a little bit nervous about how local Italians would respond to such a traditional American meal, but they seemed to greatly enjoy it! This ironically actually reflects how our experience here has been… anticipatory, and unsure of if we would like it. Yet we’re leaving with heavy hearts and hard goodbyes. The night consisted of sentimental speeches, some good food, lots of hopeful “arrividercis”, a surprise birthday celebration, and so much dancing. We had such a fun time hosting everyone and cannot wait until we get to see everyone again someday!

Ciao! My name is Reagan Lynch. I am a junior studying Marketing and am a part of the Summer 2026 cohort. For my social media takeover, I had the pleasure of interviewing community members of Ariccia during our farewell dinner. The purpose of this dinner is to thank the citizens of Ariccia for everything they have done for us this summer, from hosting us in their homes, teaching us about history, and welcoming us in a way that made us one of their own. Our program would not be possible without them. During dinner, I was able to interview several community members and ask them how JSB students have impacted their lives, and their answers were truly heartwarming. The community members truly love being a part of our story and getting to share their culture with us, as well as learning about our own culture in America. In this post, you can hear from several community members: (in order) Francesco Petrucci (Chigi Palace Curator), Maurizio (JSB emergency contact), Patrizia Lazzarin (Ariccia local involved in JSB), Francesco Morganti (High School graduate and future Harvard student), and Sandra Gomez (JSB Italian teacher). In addition to the interviews, you can see a few pictures and videos of the joy the community of Ariccia brought to our dinner. We are so thankful for these people, everything they have taught us, and that we are able to impact their lives as much as they impact ours. I hope you enjoy getting to hear from them. Arreviderci!

Ciao! I’m Kylee McCammon, a law & justice major from San Diego, California! Today we started the morning by taking part in a watercolor class led by Barbara Regina, who studied at the school of arts and uses coffee to continue to paint. Barbara shared her passion for art and taught us that every painting is a reflection of ourselves. She also showed us how simple geometric shapes can be used as the foundation for drawing facial features, making the process feel approachable and creative. After watercolor class, I had the pleasure of joining our community group for an afternoon of cultural exchange in partnership with the Albano Library. Through games, conversations, and activities, community members learned more about the United States while we also learned about their cultures and the similarities and differences we share. To end the day, everyone participated in an educational Jeopardy game that reviewed everything we had learned together. As American students, it’s important that we have these opportunities to engage with the local community and connect through creativity, learning, and simply having fun.

Sometimes the most unforgettable places are just beyond the most common tourist destinations! Ariccia is only a quick train ride away, only 10 minutes from beautiful sites, like the Popes summer residence. The train ride is only 50 minutes to and from Rome and includes beautiful scenery. Let us take you on this journey to see how easy and convenient the travel is. Ariccia is the perfect place for local traditions, a quiet escape from busy streets, and the authentic Italian experience. Ariccia and JSB can’t wait to wait to welcome you. 🩷

Hello! My name is Kaleb Myers, and I am a junior studying Hospitality Management with a concentration in Culinary Science!
Today, we explored the intersection of culture, sustainability, and craftsmanship through three unique stops in Rome.
We began at one of the most diverse markets in Italy, located near one of the largest piazzas in Rome. This space reflects the unification of Italy and the influence of northern regions such as Torino, while also showcasing the impact of migration from across the country and beyond. The market offers a wide variety of products, including vegetables from different cultures that are now grown locally. Just above the market, university students study, creating a layered environment of daily life. Nearby, a Confucius garden filled with plants from around the world symbolizes the blending of global cultures within a local setting.
Our second stop was CLORIAGE, an organization focused on integrating immigrants with sewing skills into the fashion industry. Through the use of natural and recycled materials, and traditional tailoring techniques, CLORIAGE promotes sustainable fashion while preserving cultural identity. We also discussed the global impact of fast fashion, particularly in countries like Bangladesh and Ghana, where production and waste can harm both the environment and local economies. Each garment produced by CLORIAGE tells a story, highlighting the individual who created it and the cultural meaning behind its design.
We ended the day at Il Sellaio, a family-owned leather workshop specializing in high-quality cowhide leather, using natural dyes and traditional methods.
We ended with the Valentino exhibit celebrating the house’s legacy by showcasing designs shaped by founder Valentino Garavani alongside later creative directors like Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri. Today’s experiences highlighted how culture, sustainability, and tradition intersect across industries, from food markets to fashion and craftsmanship.
