LEME - Laboratory of Electrochemistry of Materials for Energetics The group has more than twenty years of experience in the field of materials for energy storage/conversion electrochemical systems.

The group has more than twenty years of experience in the field of materials for energy storage/conversion electrochemical systems, particularly for lithium batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells, recognised by the participation to several national and international projects, also involving industrial partners. The group has also experience in the field of materials for electrochromic devices

and photoelectrochemical cells. The research group has specific skills in the preparation of inorganic, carbonaceous and polymeric electrode materials and electrolytes, and in their electrochemical characterization in view of their application in lithium batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells for transportation, stationary and portable applications. In the laboratory various instruments are available for basic and applied electrochemical studies, for preparation and for some spectroscopic and morphologic characterizations of the materials. The group has always carried out training of young researchers in the field of energy conversion systems and, more recently, in that of biomedical devices.

It was a very nice evening at Circolo Tennis (Giardini Margherita, Bologna) with three dear friends. Professor Michel Armand, who has wrote an important chapter in the history of solid electrolyte and Li ion batteries, Maryse, his lovely wife, and Professor Marina Mastragostino, my mentor since when I was a chemistry student. I knew Michel and Maryse in 1989 in Siena at Second International Symposium on Polymer Electrolytes and, since then, every time we met is always amazing (and Maryse is really special).

Become an expert in batteries through the entire supply chain!
Do you have a strong passion for energy storage technologies and desire to work at the forefront of battery innovation by an ecodesign approach?

The 2nd level Master Battery Ecodesign, in English, is designed to train new professional profiles with inter- and multidisciplinary knowledge, ranging from materials science and production processes for batteries—particularly lithium batteries—to the evaluation of sustainability in both manufacturing and end-of-life management, diagnostic techniques for assessing system performance, and eco-design principles (with a specific focus on safe and sustainable by design) as well as “design for recycling.

Discover the Master's programme at the Master website:

The Master trains experts in battery lifecycle, combining innovation, sustainability, digital tools, and eco-design for a greener energy future.

On June 20th, at ENI Donegani Institute in Novara, Caterina Bellatreccia has been Awarded by 2nd Massimo Soprani Award for her MSc thesis "Investigation of current collectors for anode-free solid-state batteries", carried out in collaboration with TZE and LEME, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Pettinger and Catia Arbizzani. The Award is intended to reward two experimental degree theses in the sector of technologies and systems for electrochemical energy storage. It is an institutional recognition wanted by INSTM in one of the research sectors in great development and of considerable interest both for INSTM and for Europe. The initiative received the patronage of the GISEL Association and the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policies of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Milan and is organized in collaboration with Eni SpA.
Congratulations, Caterina!

Pint of Science 2024: "Dal carbonio non nasce niente? Le energie del futuro (Nothing comes from carbon? The energies of the future)". Giampaolo Lacarbonara (LEME) and Francesco Paolucci (EMFM) did an exciting talk, answering to the title question: Francesco started describing the different forms of carbon for energy conversion, and Giampaolo concluded with the importance of carbon on energy storage. The students greatly appreciated the nice talks and the friendly atmosphere at Birreria Popolare. https://pintofscience.it/events/bologna
