Faculty of Engineering - Free University of Bozen-Bolzano Seamless integration of teaching, research and real-world applications. Prospective students: www.un

An innovative, integrated approach forms the core framework of the teaching, research and real-world applications at the Faculty. Our study programmes are supported by an excellent infrastructure and evolve from fresh research results, so that students of all levels have opportunity to work directly on software development projects that have real-world impact for business, society, and the interna

tional research community. We deliver the outstanding level of services of a private university while intentionally keeping our fees at the same socially sustainable level of a public one. We also offer income-based scholarships to all European students. Academics from many different countries create the ideal international environment for research. Leading scientists in data management, software engineering and intelligent systems work on projects that are internationally recognised and financed both by private companies and public institutions. Research and teaching activities are constantly translated into real-world applications as the Faculty addresses society's actual demands, and organises common endeavours with partners such as private and public enterprises, municipalities, local health units, public transport and schools.

How creative is AI, really? 🤖
A study by our Faculty, in collaboration with the University of Trieste, compares how ideas are generated by humans vs. AI. Researchers analyzed responses from 81 students and ChatGPT-4o using established psychological tasks.
The findings are clear: the most creative humans still produce the most original ideas. ChatGPT performs in the middle—outperforming less creative individuals, but not matching top performers.
The research highlights AI’s value as a tool to support idea generation, while also raising questions about the risk of homogenizing creativity.
The study was presented at the 2026 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, where it received a Best Paper Award.

Will artificial intelligence make language certificates obsolete?
This possibility is explored in this interview with Marco Montali, Vice Dean and Professor at the Faculty of Engineering in Bolzano.
In South Tyrol, bilingualism has long been both a strength and a challenge. But emerging AI technologies—such as real-time translation glasses and smart earbuds—could soon change how people live and work across language barriers. According to Montali, these tools may reduce the need for formal language skills and certifications, reshaping professions tied to languages and beyond. What once seemed like science fiction could soon become everyday reality.
