The 2nd edition of Bodies of Water, the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme curated by Giulia Colletti, focused on the notion of the “aridity line” as both a climatic and cultural threshold.
Students from Technische Hochschule Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS), School of Form SWPS University, ESADA Granada joined us in Catania to investigate how heat waves, seasonal droughts and desertification are reshaping Mediterranean regions and everyday life.
Guided by agronomist Simona Battagliola and architect Alba Balmaseda, participants explored the the city center and the Orto Botanico. Through direct observation of the environment and physical contact with surfaces, they mapped where water still lingers or has left its mark and learned how plants have adapted to increasing dryness.
This research then led to the design phase led by Makoto Fukuda, centered around Piazza Scammacca, a busy square with an outdoor restaurant area, direct heat exposure and almost no vegetation: working in groups, students developed ideas and prototypes to improve its climatic quality and livability, presenting their work to the local community.
