What an intense week for our PhD students!
Ludovica, Alessandra and Tommaso took part in exciting conferences and school! 💥

Tommaso and Alessandra joined CHESS2026 in Bari 🇮🇹, a school dedicated to advanced spectroscopies and surface analysis.
It was a great chance to meet fellow PhD students and young researchers, opening up new possibilities for networking 🤝.
🏆Tommaso also presented a poster on tracking trace metals in biofouled plastics using LA‑ICP‑MS — and proudly won the Best Poster Award!!!🏆

Meanwhile, Ludovica attended SafePlastChem2026, a conference rich in discussions on plastics and their environmental challenges 🌍.
She presented her research on the interaction between plastics and heavy metals, exploring adsorption and leaching processes.
✨An inspiring experience full of new meetings and valuable insights for her future work ✨.

When the PhD life gets exciting, it really shows 💫

It was an honor to represent the values of our university at the Analytical Chemistry Division conference in Pisa 🇮🇹✨
A week filled with inspiring scientific exchanges, reconnecting with old friends, and making new ones!
We had the chance to share our research in Chemometrics, new methods in Analytical Chemistry, and Environmental Chemistry 🌍.

Our PhD students Sara, Gianluca and professor Damiano Monticelli are having a great time at the Goldschmidt conference in Prague 🇨🇿: the foremost annual and international congress on geochemistry and related subjects. They brought their new methods for evaluating metal isotope ratio and metalloids diffusion and mobility across environmental matrices, receiving a great success and exchange with the scientific community 🧨

🔬✨ Our PhD student Manuel presented his research at the 22nd International Conference on Near Infrared Spectroscopy in Rome (June 8–12, 2025)!

📍 His poster compares two portable NIR devices for predicting protein and moisture content in durum wheat kernels – a step toward rapid, in-field analysis for the agri-food sector 🌾📈

Prof. Spanu and Prof. Binda, along with the PhD students Stefano and Ludovica, shared innovative research on:
🥼 Leaching of plastic additives
🧪 Plastic additives toxicological effects on freshwater organisms (a collaboration with Ljubljana University 🇸🇮)
📈 Advanced analytical methods to detect toxic species of Hg and Sb (NIVA collaboration 🇳🇴)

PhD students Sara presented our collaborative work with RWTH University 🇩🇪, diving deep (literally!) into the pollution of ocean sediments at 8000 m below the ocean surface 🌊
