For students of the 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, the AFEPA programme offers the opportunity to study within a truly international academic network and to share experiences with students from different countries, universities and backgrounds.

One of these opportunities is the annual 𝗔𝗙𝗘𝗣𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹, which this year brought students from the four partner universities together at SLU - Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala.

Over the course of the week, students took part in a 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, discussed Master’s thesis projects and attended an intensive course on 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴. The programme also included study visits and social activities in Uppsala and Stockholm, creating space for learning, exchange and connection beyond the classroom.

For our students, the Summer School is not only an academic experience, but also a chance to 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 and experience first-hand the European and international dimension of the degree programme.

From field to global markets, every agricultural product is part of a complex system shaped by 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀, 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Understanding this system means learning how food supply chains work, how companies make decisions, how policies influence markets and how sustainability is becoming a key driver of change in the agri-food sector.
The Master of Science in Agricultural and Food Economics at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore prepares students to read these connections with an economic, managerial and international perspective.

Taught entirely in English at the 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀, the programme combines academic training, interaction with companies, study-abroad opportunities and the possibility of pursuing a 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲.
Because the future of agri-food needs professionals able to look beyond the product and understand the decisions, policies and strategies behind it.

💡 The conference brought together researchers and experts from around the world to discuss the transformation of the bioeconomy, addressing topics such as food innovation, agricultural biotechnology, consumer behaviour and global value chains.

Among the research contributions, Federico Parmiggiani presented some of the final results of the PRIN MAGIC project on innovation in the bioeconomy. The study explored how innovation is generated and diffused across global agrifood value chains, drawing extensively on modelling tools developed during his AMYRN exchange, funded by the BrightSpace Horizon Europe Project.

Mirta Casati presented the results of a laboratory experiment, also funded by BrightSpace Horizon Europe Project, investigating consumer preferences for upcycled food products. Conducted at the sensory laboratory of Università Cattolica in Piacenza with 291 participants, the study assessed consumers’ willingness to pay for an upcycled primosale cheese, produced by recovering ricotta close to its expiry date, compared with its conventional counterpart.

Alongside them, Elena Castellari and Claudio Soregaroli also contributed to the international debate, bringing complementary perspectives on the economic, social and policy challenges shaping contemporary agrifood systems.
Their participation reflects the strong connection between the 𝗔𝗙𝗘 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲, international research networks and the ongoing transformation of the agricultural and food sector.
