Tie-dyeing requires patience and an open sense to work around unexpected results, accepting that intention meets chance. In the Fabric Styling course in Florence, students approach textiles as something to be shaped, resisted, and transformed through process.

The course explores a range of methods including Shibori, tie-dye, embroidery, block printing, digital textile design, and hand-printing processes. Each technique builds an understanding of how color, texture, and pattern can be constructed directly onto the textile.

Color does not simply apply; it seeps, resists, fades, and intensifies over time. Through repetition and experimentation, students learn to embrace the process.

What emerges is a series of evolving textile studies, materials that carry process within them, ready to be reworked, combined, and translated into garments or larger compositions.

Last May, we featured University of Vermont student Ruthie Bell’s beautiful poem Future Tense in our Nurturing the Future exhibition at the Istituto degli Innocenti.

Written during her semester at LdM Florence, the poem traces knots in the body, questions without answers, and the quiet possibility of becoming.

For Ruthie, Florence was a place of transformation, a city that taught her to look more closely, to notice beauty, and to sit with uncertainty. Each night, she walked to the Arno and let its current carry her thoughts downstream.

“Finding places of stability and the sublime in nature,” she writes, helped her remember that, even amid uncertainty, there is still “possibility and promise” in the years ahead.

We love this image of the future as a current: something we cannot hold still, only enter, follow, and trust.

“No matter how tightly wound my hands are,
This world will coax them open
finding feeling a home in the body,
bringing us heart first towards
a peripheral scene.
Somewhere I haven’t yet been.”

Isabella Studetn Feauture As part of her Bachelor of Science in Studio Art at Marist University, Isabella Walejko spent the Spring 2026 semester interning at the LdM Gallery, gaining hands-on experience in exhibition planning, gallery operations, and curatorial practice before graduating later that semester.

Throughout her internship, Isabella helped research exhibitions, write press materials, welcome visitors, and support the gallery’s day-to-day activities. One of her highlights was helping organize the final SOAP! Magazine exhibition while also exhibiting her own artwork.

“I realized that curation is a form of storytelling rather than simply organizing artworks.”

Congratulations to Isabella on her graduation, and thank you for all of your hard work at the LdM Gallery. We wish you all the best as you begin your career in the arts!

This spring, Alexandria Swanson, a Bachelor of Fine Arts student specializing in Drawing and Painting at California State University, Long Beach, joined the LdM Gallery team as an intern, gaining hands-on experience in exhibition planning, gallery communications, and curatorial practice.

Throughout the semester, Alexandria wrote press releases, created social media content, interviewed exhibiting artists, welcomed visitors, and helped develop new ways to engage students with the gallery.

Reflecting on the experience, she shared:

“I learned I really love the behind-the-scenes aspect of a gallery and how important it is to foster spaces for up-and-coming artists.”

As she continues her studies, Alexandria hopes to pursue an MFA in Painting and one day open a gallery where emerging artists can exhibit their work in a professional setting.

From research to real-world design. During Spring 2026, Graphic Design student Flynn Bridgett took part in a Professional Opportunity with the LdM Marketing Office, exploring new ideas for LdM merchandise.
Starting from the question, what would students actually want to use and keep?, Flynn researched the LdM brand, student life in Florence and current design trends. Her concepts ranged from tote bags and postcards to reusable water bottles and playing cards, looking beyond the logo to consider how design can connect a brand with the everyday study abroad experience.
The project gave Flynn the opportunity to experience a professional design process, moving from research and concept development to feedback, refinement and a final production-ready proposal. A great example of taking creative skills beyond the classroom and putting them to work on a real brief.

What happens when the city around you becomes part of the design process? During Spring 2026, Graphic Design and Studio Art student Tyler Vose took part in a Professional Opportunity with the LdM Marketing Office, developing a merchandise concept inspired by the architecture of Florence.
Looking at everything from the Duomo to smaller architectural details and patterns, Tyler translated his observations into designs for a notebook and collectible pins. The idea was to create something practical for everyday student life, but also something personal that could become a reminder of studying in Florence.
From initial research and sketches to materials, production and final design, the project gave Tyler the opportunity to take an idea through the different stages of a professional creative brief.
Florence wasn’t just the setting for the project. It became part of the design itself.
