The Institute was established in 2001 as a private non-profit institute registered with the Italian Ministry of Education and recognized as an American center for higher education in Florence, Italy. ISI Florence is one of the founding institutions of the Consortium for Public Universities established in 2005, comprised of Pennsylvania State University, University of Connecticut, University of Virginia, Arizona State University, and University of Melbourne (Australia). The Institute also maintains academic affiliations with other colleges and universities including Roger Williams University, Rutgers University, Connecticut College, Marywood University, University of Maryland, and the University of Florence. ISI Florence’s sister program is the Umbra Institute in Perugia. The Institute welcomes new institutional partners whose students will make a positive contribution to the ISI Florence student body by exhibiting the maturity, enthusiasm, and commitment to gain the most from the study abroad experience.

This year ISI Florence and Roger Williams University celebrate 25 years of the RWU Architecture Program in Florence!

To mark the anniversary, architect and ISI professor Carlo Achilli curated an exhibition showcasing student projects for the urban renewal of seven Florentine piazzas. The projects explore how thoughtful design can make public spaces more livable, promote sustainability, and respect the city’s historic character.

The exhibition celebrates 25 years of architectural education, cultural exchange, and hands-on learning in Florence, where the city itself has served as a classroom for generations of students.

YES CHEF! 👩🏼‍🍳
Last week, we took our students to Pastamania - Pasta Making Class for a wonderful cooking class! They learned how to make three different types of pasta by hand, getting a chance to experience a little of the Italian food tradition firsthand. It’s one of the many activities we offer to help students connect with Italian life and culture during their time abroad 🇮🇹

Running for a cause! 🎗️ Our students joined Corri la Vita in Florence, taking part in the annual 5K to support breast cancer research and prevention. It was a great way to explore the city, stay active, and come together for an important cause 🩷

Every stitch counts! 🧶
Our students spent an afternoon with Sheep Italia (Sheep Italia), learning how to crochet and creating pieces that will become warm blankets for people experiencing homelessness across Italy.

A big thank-you to Monica, who joined us as a volunteer and helped guide our students through the process! At ISI, we’re proud to support activities that bring students together, help them learn new skills, and give back to the community. ❤️

Take a field trip with our architecture student Lily ()! 🏛️ At ISI Florence, we believe one of the best parts of studying abroad is getting to experience parts of the curriculum firsthand. Experiences like these give our students the chance to connect what they learn in the classroom with the places, buildings, and history that surround them throughout Italy.

First volleyball game of the season! 🏐🙌🏻

Every semester, ISI Florence organises monthly volleyball games between American and Italian students, a great opportunity to get to know their peers and practice Italian outside of the classroom 🇮🇹
