It’s time 🌍🌲

Also this year, the Geolab - Laboratorio di Geomatica DAGRI UNIFI is participating in the EGU General Assembly in Vienna with several contributions focused on the role of forests in climate change mitigation.

We presented research covering:
🌱 continuous cover forestry and regeneration dynamics in black pine stands
💻 innovation and digitalization in European forestry
🌳 tree stability monitoring using low-cost sensors

🍂 Satellite Remote Sensing for Monitoring Cork Oak Woodlands—A Comprehensive Literature Review

Cork oak (Quercus suber) woodlands hold significant ecological, cultural, and economic value in the Mediterranean basin, particularly due to cork production, one of the most valued non-wood forest products worldwide. However, cork oak ecosystems are increasingly threatened by climate change, land-use intensification, and rural abandonment, leading to widespread signs of decline. To address these challenges, data-driven and scalable methods are more essential than ever. Satellite-based remote sensing (RS) offers a promising approach for large-scale, cost-effective, and timely monitoring of cork oak forests dynamics and health, but an exhaustive review about this topic is missing.

GEDI and Sentinel data integration for quantifying agroforestry tree height and stocks

Agroforestry is a strategic asset for combating climate change and mitigating environmental impacts, with poplar plantations providing ecological benefits, valuable products, and CO2 sequestration. Conventional monitoring is slow, so we used Remote Sensing (RS) and Deep Learning (U-Net) to estimate carbon stocks across the 46000 km2 Padan Plain. Using Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and GEDI data, we developed a 10m resolution Canopy Height Model (MAE 2.6m) to predict forestry variables like DBH, GSV, AGB, and Carbon Stock (CS). Results showed an average GSV of 70 m3ha-1 and total CS of 13MgC ha-1. We estimated the total harvested GSV in 2021-2022 at 370000 m3, equal to 66000 MgC The integration of multiple RS datasets with advanced machine learning is crucial for effectively monitoring these dynamic plantations and quantifying key climate change mitigation variables like carbon stocks.
