📣The second week of excavation of the "Medieval Petra - Shobak Project" mission has begun at the site of Jayya (Shobak, Jordan). The site represents the material evidence of the development of the lower town of the Islamic period, which developed at Shobak after Saladin's conquest in 1189. Stratigraphy, architectural remains, and artefacts appear to confirm an initial Ayyubid phase (12th-13th c.), followed by Mamluk restorations and reconstructions (13th-14th c.), after which the settlement probably underwent a phased abandonment beginning in the late 15th c.
The excavation involves undergraduate and postgraduate students and PhD candidates from the Universities of Florence, Bonn, Cadiz, and Hussein bin Talal (Petra College). The research is directed by the Chair of Medieval Archaeology at the University of Florence, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Antiquities of Jordan, and the Petra Archaeological Park.
