Today marks a very special milestone for our PhD Programme in "Biotechnology and Smart Practices for a Sustainable Management of Natural Resource, Food and Agriculture": the first evaluation session of our first Doctoral Program (###VIII Cycle). Scienze Agrarie, Alimenti, Risorse Naturali e Ingegneria - UniFg

We are proud to celebrate our first PhD candidates:
-Dr. Annalisa D'Amelio, thesis "Biotechnological solutions for sustainable approaches in agriculture: the case of plant growth promoting bacteria".

Dr. Alessandro De Santis, thesis “Integrating statistical modelling and microbial bioremediation for sustainable polluted soil management: pseudomonas-based strategies within a circular economy framework".

-Dr. Angela Guerrieri, thesis" Halophyte and medicinal plants as a source of plant growth promoting bacteria and natural extracts for sustainable applications".

A sincere thank you to the Evaluation Committee, the PhD Board, the supervisors, and all colleagues who contributed to this important achievement.

SYMPOSIUM ON POSTHARVEST PATHOLOGY SUCCESFULLY CONCLUDED IN NORWAY

Prof. Giancarlo Colelli participated last week in the VIII Intnl. Symposium on Postharvest Technology held in Ullensvang, Norway.
As Chair of the Postharvest Division of the International Society for Horticultural Science - ISHS Prof. Colelli opened the event introducing the ISHS to the participants, presented the ISHS Medal and Certificate to Dr. Jorunn Børve, Convener of the event, coordinated the ISHS Business Meeting, and awarded the ISHS Young Mind Awards during the closing ceremony.
He also presented a Poster on "Spectral Information Combined with Physical Attributes, for the Prediction of Blackheart Defective Pomegranate fruit caused by Alternaria species" (authored by L. Russo, D. Fatchurrahman, M. L. Amodio, and G. Colelli) which is part of the Doctoral Project of Lucia Russo.

NEW PAPER PUBLISHED ON POSTHARVEST OZONE APPLICATION ON HIGH-MOISTURE ONIONS

This publication is one of the products of Project CIPOMAR. Results show that gaseous ozone applied during forced-air curing enhances the storage stability of high-moisture onions. Trials were made on “Cipolla Bianca di Margherita” which is a famous landrace for early onions, characterized by a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), with a very short postharvest life due to the high-moisture content.
You can download the paper here: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foodcont.2026.112246

TWO MORE PUBLICATIONS FROM OUR POMEGRANATE PROJECT

Two articles have been recently published on the prestigious Postharvest Biology and Technology and both relate to the elucidation of the physiological and biochemical mechanisms driving husk-scald (HS) under contrasting relative humidity (RH) levels (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.postharvbio.2026.114376 ) and under different controlled atmosphere conditions (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.postharvbio.2026.114375). Both articles are part of the PhD Thesis of Dr. Mahshad Maghoumi who concluded her program at the Università di Foggia last year.

Maghoumi M., Fatchurrahman D., Amodio M.L., Colelli G., Cisneros-Zevallos L. 2026. Husk scald in pomegranates is a programmed stress-induced senescence event triggered by water loss and exacerbated by low RH. Postharvest Biology and Technology, 239, 114376. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.postharvbio.2026.114376

Maghoumi M., Fatchurrahman D., Amodio M.L., Colelli G., Cisneros-Zevallos L. 2026. Controlled atmospheres attenuate husk scald in pomegranates by reducing oxidative stress, modulating hormones, and delaying senescence. Postharvest Biology and Technology, 239, 114375. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.postharvbio.2026.114375
