Tarello Institute for Legal Philosophy (TiLPh) is one of the world’s leading centres for legal research and education. Our work is focused on topics in analytical legal theory and philosophy of positive law, constitutional democracy, human rights, bioethics, sociology of law and history of european legal culture. TiLPh members run four peer-reviewed journals and a few book series. Moreover, TiLPh

currently offers two post-graduate study programmes: an Advanced international master in Global Rule of Law & Constitutional Democracy, and a PhD programme in Philosophy of Law and Legal Bioethics. We also welcome applications to make research visits from scholars of excellence at all stages of the profession especially those with active interests in topics of our expertise. Proposed visits may be for anything from a few days to a full academic year. We can usually provide visitors with office accommodation at the Institute, where we have a library with an outstanding collection of works in legal philosophy. Most of it is in English, Spanish and Italian, though we also have numerous publications in French and German.

¡Meet our team at the Tarello Institute!

I'm Oscar Carvajal. I'm a PhD student at the University of Genoa. My field of research concerns the logical formalization of norms in general, with particular emphasis on the various logical formalizations of constitutional principles. Likewise, my research addresses, from both a logical and interpretative perspective, several issues related to the dynamics of law, such as axiological hierarchies, the act of constitutional review, methods of reasoning, and the specific nature of constitutional interpretation.

¡Meet our team at the Tarello Institute!

John A. Carlin Sánchez is a PhD candidate in Philosophy of Law at the University of Genoa.

Within the Genoese legal realism tradition, his work analyses the argumentative role of technical terminology in legal interpretation and legal construction in technological contexts, focusing on epistemic opacity and its implications for the determination of normative content.

He develops double dependence (epistemic and infrastructural) as an analytical framework to explain the interaction between the Brussels Effect and the Washington Effect, drawing on a comparative analysis of the case law of the ECtHR, the CJEU and the SCOTUS (2000–2025).

His interests include new technologies, constitutional theory, democracy theory, public law, comparative constitutional law, legal theory, and criminal law.

He will be a visiting researcher at the University of Alicante from 1 to 31 May 2026.
