The “Charles Galley”, probably the best-known "Galley" or "Galley Frigate" of the Royal Navy. Launched in 1676 at Woolwich, she was armed with 32 guns, 28 nine-pounders and 4 three-pounders.
Here we see her in a painting by Willem van de Velde the Younger in 1677 and in a drawing attributed to Willem van de Velde the Elder, possibly made in 1676.

A “Nave Galere” (in French, “Nave Galera” in Italian, “Galley” or “Frigate Galley” in English) used by the English for trade and for privateering in the Mediterranean. The image is part of “Recüeil des vuës de tous les differens bastimens de la mer Mediterranée et de l'Océan, avec leurs noms et usages” by Pierre-Jacob Gueroult du Pas, published in Paris in 1710. It is interesting to note how the French author uses the Italian term “Nave”.
The “Galley” were present both in the oceans and in the Mediterranean; in both cases they were used for trade as well as for privateering and piracy. They were also used for “maritime policing”, that is, for patrol duties, hunting privateers and pirates, and escorting convoys.

Two plans of “Galley”, that is, English Galley Frigates (in italian "Navi galere" or "Fregate galere") typical of the second half of the 17th century and the first three quarters of the 18th century. As we said yesterday, in English nautical terminology “Galley” referred to three-masted sailing vessels equipped with oars as auxiliary propulsion. The smaller ports below deck are those from which the oars were deployed. The term "Galley" was usually part of the ship’s name (for example: "Adventure Galley")

When a galley lay at anchor in port, her weather deck was covered with a large awning, providing shelter and a place of rest for both oarsmen and sailors. Galleys possessed very little accommodation space below decks; consequently, except in exceptional circumstances, both rowers and seamen lived and slept on the open deck.
When not in use, the oars were secured in a raised position so that their blades remained clear of the water. They were never brought inboard, as there was insufficient room within the vessel to stow them

THE "BLACK PEARL" OF PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: A "GALLEY"

The Black Pearl, the famous vessel featured in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” and the subsequent films of the series, is representative of a type of ship used in 17th and 18th-century maritime trade, Caribbean piracy and Mediterranean corsairing. But what type of vessel is it?
The answer is yes. The Black Pearl was inspired by a “Galley”, a particular type of merchant vessel equipped with oars as an auxiliary means of propulsion. “Galleys” were employed both in commerce and by pirates, privateers and corsairs. The use of oars provided greater maneuverability in combat and in confined waters than conventional sailing ships, and proved particularly useful during calms and when entering or leaving harbours. Oars could also help the vessel attain higher speeds in light winds, especially during pursuit or escape. In one scene of the film, the Black Pearl is shown chasing a brigantine (or brig) while using oars in addition to wind power.
The “Galley” (“Nave galera” in italian) was a vessel type widely employed by the English, French, and Dutch merchant marines during the 17th and 18th century. In English usage, the names of such vessels almost always included the word "Galley". Notable examples include the "Adventure Galley" of the pirate William Kidd, the "Whydah Galley" of the pirate Samuel Bellamy, and the "Charles Galley" of the Royal Navy.
Unlike the Mediterranean galleys, whose oars were worked by rowers seated on benches, the oars of these "Galleys" were operated by members of the crew standing at the oars.

THE PAPERS OF A CORSICAN PRIVATEER (1762)

We have previously discussed the difference between a privateer and a pirate. The former operated lawfully under the authority of a privateering commission (or letter of marque) issued by the state in whose service he sailed. The latter was simply a “sea robber” — a criminal whose activities took place not on land, but at sea.
However, the privateering commission was not the only document a privateer carried when he put to sea in search of prizes. Several others accompanied him on his voyage, and in this post we would like to show you some of them.
In order:
1. The privateering commission of Francesco Antonio Gavi (known as “Cincella, son of the Salaiola”), captain of the privateering felucca "L'Intrapredente" of the Corsican Republic, signed by Pasquale Paoli, “General of the Corsican Nation”.
2. A prize commission (printed form to be completed as required), namely the document issued by the privateer captain to the officer whom he appointed to command a captured vessel (a prize), in order to conduct her safely to a friendly port.
3. The military regulations (“Maritime Laws”) that Corsican privateers were required to observe.
The opening page of the logbook of Captain Giorgio Rossi, commander of the Corsican privateering scappavia "Il Patriota", which was operating in company with Captain Gavi’s felucca.
How have these documents survived to the present day? The answer is quite interesting.
"L'Intrapredente" and "Il Patriota" were two vessels commissioned for privateering by Pasquale Paoli, General of the Corsican Nation and leader of the insurgents fighting for Corsican independence from the Republic of Genoa. During the summer of 1762, the two vessels were cruising in the waters off northern Sardinia in search of Genoese coral-fishing vessels when they were surprised and captured by six armed vessels from Bonifacio, the Corsican town that remained loyal to Genoa.

The documents found on board the two privateers are now preserved in the State Archives of Genoa (Archivio Segreto, n. 1722). Those presented here represent only a small portion of the material: the archive contains much more of considerable historical interest.
