🏆 A recognition for research on animal welfare.
Edoardo Fiorilla, post-doctoral researcher at the University of Turin’s Department of Veterinary Sciences and member of the ASPmed team, received the Best Presentation Award at ECPLF 2026, the 12th European Conference on Precision Livestock Farming, held in Valencia from 14 to 17 September 2026.
🐓 His awarded study, “Thermography as a non-invasive tool to assess physiological variation in chickens during the tonic immobility test”, explores the use of infrared thermography to monitor changes in comb and leg surface temperature in chickens during the tonic immobility test, a widely used method to assess fear responses in poultry.
📹 The study, by Edoardo Fiorilla, Clara Bordin, Achille Schiavone and Laura Ozella, highlights the potential of non-invasive technologies to support the assessment of animal welfare. This research is closely connected to ASPmed’s work on animal health and welfare and on the use of innovative monitoring technologies in sustainable Mediterranean farming systems. Within ASPmed, sensor-based tools are being explored to monitor laying hens and sheep as part of integrated agroforestry and agroecological systems.
🌱ASPmed is a project supported by the European Union through the PRIMA Programme, bringing together research institutions and universities from across the Mediterranean. The project aims to contribute to more resilient and sustainable sheep and poultry farming systems while strengthening biodiversity, ecosystem services and animal welfare.
👏 Congratulations to Edoardo and the whole research team for this well-deserved recognition!
