On June 9, the KNIR hosts the seminar 𝐎𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬: 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 organized by our Fellow Mario Panico (Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna).

From Soviet material culture to Holocaust belongings to the entangled legacies of colonialism, museum professionals, scholars and artists are increasingly confronted with things that resist straightforward interpretation. These objects can become wounds, to use Roland Barthes’ metaphor, they unsettle and demand ethical accountability. This seminar responds to this challenge and brings together perspectives from art history, semiotics, museum and memory studies to explore the issues around such difficult objects.

This public lecture by Dr Laura Ciglioni (Sapienza Università di Roma) is the keynote lecture of 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 “𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐢 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐞: 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝” organized by Dr Carolien Stolte and Dr Daniele Paolini (both Leiden University). In this workshop, papers on the engagements of Italian peace activist(s) from any political or religious orientation, with any region of the decolonizing world, will be presented. Italian peace advocacy provides an especially productive lens through which to view efforts to build broad international coalitions for peace that had to navigate different understandings and practices of peace advocacy. Italy’s long-standing networks of religiously inflected peace organizations on the one hand, and the prominence of the Italian Left in organizations like the World Peace Council on the other, made for a diverse landscape in which a broad spectrum of traditions of peace advocacy co-existed, overlapped, and occasionally diverged. During this workshop, the participants intend to analyse, among other things, to what extent Italian peace movements were privileged interlocutors for actors in the decolonizing world in their intertwined struggles for independence and peace.

The workshop is part of the NWIB Visiting Professorship of Dr Carolien Stolte at KNIR.

Day 2 (22 May) of the international conference 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐦𝐬 (University of Groningen) turns to the question of whether settler colonialism should be understood as an exclusively modern phenomenon, analysing forms of colonisation in the pre-modern and early modern world. The conference concludes on the third day with an excursion to the Dutch Colonies of Benevolence, where it will explore settler colonialism and heritage.

This KNIR/Rijksmuseum Seminar offers a unique opportunity for object-based research in both Amsterdam and Rome. Over the past decade, the Rijksmuseum has built an important collection of Italian design drawings, acquired through the Decorative Art Fund. This collection forms the primary material for the seminar. Participants will study a selection of drawings as the starting point for their individual research papers. The stay in Rome allows them to deepen their knowledge about Italian drawings and decorative arts, about practices, materials, and techniques, and about the context in which the selected drawings were created, used, and collected.

Dates: 4 September - 13 November 2026
Deadline for applications: 21 June 2026

Former KNIR Scholarshipholder, Dr Robin Oomkes, will discuss the motives the German Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941) had for making rather excessive gifts – the marble Goethe in Rome’s Villa Borghese and the even more colossal bronze Fridtjov on the Sognefjord in Central Norway – and how they were received by their intended recipients – the people of Rome and Norway. Together with Robin, we will discover what meaning we can ascribe to these huge artworks today.

We extend the invitation of Det Norske Institutt i Roma that is hosting the evening lecture “Goethe and Fridtjov – the Kaiser’s follies in Rome and Norway” by Dr Robin Oomkes, this Wednesday at 18.00 CEST.
