The students of Geophysical Monitoring of Volcanic Areas participated in a field activity on Mt. Etna together with Professor Stefano Branca, Filippo Greco, and the INGV-OE staff 🌋

At the “La Montagnola” monitoring station (2600 m a.s.l.), they explored the main instruments used for volcanic monitoring, including gas monitoring systems, seismometers, infrasound stations, infrared thermal cameras, and gravimeters.

The series of seminars led by Professor Mauro Agate of the University of Palermo was a success.
As part of the new course "Applied Stratigraphy" taught by Professor Roberta Somma, the teaching was complemented by interesting seminars on the interpretation of high-resolution seismic reflection profiles. The features of passive continental margins, thrust belts, depositional sequences with systems tracts, and petroleum systems were carefully examined and interpreted on seismic profiles.
Thank you, Prof. Agate

This subject provides the theoretical and methodological foundations for the analysis of the Earth’s subsurface, with particular emphasis on the geological and structural characterization of crystalline basements and sedimentary successions. It also covers integrated seismic and sequence stratigraphic analysis, as well as the identification and evaluation of subsurface geo-resources, including groundwater, hydrocarbons, and mineral deposits.

🌍 Bridging Geophysics and Industrial Safety
Understanding seismic risk today means going beyond ground motion and structural damage. Within the Geophysical Sciences for Seismic Risk framework, increasing attention is given to Natech risk (Natural Hazard Triggering Technological Disasters)—the complex interaction between natural hazards and industrial systems.
On April 27, 2026, the M.Sc. in Geophysical Sciences for Seismic Risk at the University of Messina hosts an international webinar on Seismo-Induced Chemical Risk, organized by Prof. Gianfranco Giorgianni, featuring leading experts from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, including Elisabeth Krausmann and Gkoktsi Kyriaki.
The event will explore:
Fundamentals of Natech risk and its management
Advanced methodologies for seismic-induced industrial risk
Practical applications using the RAPID-N tool for rapid Natech risk assessment
This initiative highlights the importance of integrating geophysics, engineering, and industrial safety into a multi-hazard perspective, preparing the next generation of scientists and professionals to tackle cascading disaster scenarios.
