The conference Active Conservation of Archaeological Landscape explores innovative strategies to preserve archaeological landscapes—not just as heritage to protect, but as opportunities for cultural and social development.
Part of the Master’s programs in Sustainable Architecture and Landscape Design and Landscape Architecture – Land Landscape Heritage at Politecnico di Milano, the event highlights an interdisciplinary approach combining architectural restoration, climate risk management, and territorial governance.
Speakers will address key themes such as design and memory in archaeological sites, integrated conservation models (including the Appia Antica case), and climate adaptation strategies. The goal is to move beyond static preservation, promoting a dynamic vision of heritage that connects protection, community engagement, and sustainable development.

Primo passo nel nostro programma Formazione Scuola-Lavoro, ECHOES Nosedo!

La 4C scientifico dell’Istituto Allende-Custodi, sotto la guida di e con l'aiuto di , ha inaugurato il proprio percorso specifico con un’attività tutta dedicata al rilievo geometrico e dello stato di conservazione dei manufatti idraulici nel Parco della Vettabbia.
Dopo una veloce introduzione teorica, gli studenti si sono immersi nella parte operativa: misurare, ridisegnare e analizzare alcuni manufatti presenti nel Parco della Vettabbia e nella Marcita di Chiaravalle, scoprendo sul campo cosa significa documentare e leggere il paesaggio attraverso le sue infrastrutture idrauliche.

Un’esperienza coinvolgente che apre la strada alle molte attività diverse che affronteremo insieme nel corso di questo anno accademico!

WatHer! Launching a great Interreg Euro-MED Project

The kick-off meeting of the WatHer – Water Heritage in European Rural Mediterranean. Re(dis)covering water heritage systems to face climate challenges project took place in Granada on October 27–28.

WatHer revives centuries-old Water Heritage Systems (WHS) as innovative, culture/nature-based solutions to address drought and climate change in rural Mediterranean areas. The project focuses on restoring historic canals, ponds, and irrigation ditches—structures that, though long neglected, have historically ensured sustainable water management. In the selected pilot sites, WHS are mapped, restored, and monitored by combining local knowledge with modern technologies such as GIS and environmental sensors. Action plans are co-designed with local communities, merging ancestral practices with contemporary ecological standards. To promote widespread adoption, the project provides training guidelines, engages local stakeholders through seminars and consultations, and develops a joint strategy for WHS reuse. Transnational cooperation—within the Global Network of Water Museums—will allow sharing of this approach beyond national borders, transforming heritage practices into a common Mediterranean resource.
After an intensive first day of meetings, the second day featured a visit to the Andalusian town of Dílar, where participants explored the historic acequias—the traditional irrigation channels of the Sierra Nevada. Their restoration is being led by the MEMOLab (Laboratory of Biocultural Archaeology) of the University of Granada, coordinated by Prof. José María Martín Civantos. The acequias represent one of the project’s key pilot cases.

The WatHer project involves 12 partners from 9 European countries—from Portugal to Cyprus, including Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Albania.

Una magnifica domenica calda e soleggiata ha accompagnato gli incontri e visite guidate organizzate da , e nell'ambito di .
Dopo un primo incontro la mattina presso Villa Necchi Campiglio, le attività sono proseguite a Boscoincittà e a Cascina Linterno, in collaborazione con l'Associazione Amici Cascina Linterno .agricultura Cascina Linterno - Linterno AgriCultura - Punto Parco Agricolo Sud Milano
, e .bianchi.180 hanno magistralmente presentato i risultati del Workshop "Water Heritage for a resilient city", il cui obiettivo è stato porre le basi per successivi studi per la conservazione e qualificazione del sistema irriguo storico e dei fontanili da Rho a Rogoredo. A seguire l'attività partecipativa durante la quale abbiamo "dato i nomi" ai fontanili del Parco delle Cave utilizzando vernice, ecologica a base acquosa.

Milano Metropoli Rurale è il racconto della riscoperta da parte della città della sua storia agricola, dalla scala territoriale alla descrizione dell’esperienza di salvaguardia dell’antico insediamento rurale di Cascina Linterno.
Il patrimonio storico agricolo di Milano, frutto e motore di secolari dinamiche socioeconomiche e produttive, è oggi visto come ricco di molteplici valori, sedimentati e contemporanei. Costituisce quindi un’importante risorsa utile per la qualità della vita e la costruzione di un futuro sostenibile per l’area metropolitana.
Le vicende descritte nell’opera sono narrate direttamente dai molti protagonisti che vi hanno partecipato.

Yesterday marked the conclusion of the three-day conference (9–11 July 2025) “Grey Heritage. Reflections and Experiences of Architecture, Landscape, and Urban Fabric at the Margins of Protection”, held at the Politecnico di Milano.
Moments of exchange and discussion enriched a conference full of insights into the protection, conservation, and management of a vast heritage that is often considered “minor,” but which in fact constitutes the backbone of our landscapes—both urban and rural.
The PaRID research group from the Politecnico took part with three contributions.

"Green Heritage: Toward a Dynamic Protection of Agricultural Landscapes", by Paola Branduini (PaRID) and Rosella Saibene (Ticino Regional Park Authority), highlighted the role of dynamic conservation in safeguarding agricultural landscape heritage.

Andrea L’Erario, Lionella Scazzosi, Paola Nella Branduini, Stefania Landi (PaRID), and Laura Daglio (DABC-Polimi) discussed the importance of civic engagement in the recognition of values and participation in decision-making processes concerning public heritage (presentation title: Participation in the Reuse Project of Public Landscape Heritage: The Case of Cascina Campazzino, Milan).

Lastly, Stefania Landi and her colleague Mehrnaz Rajabi highlighted the importance of safeguarding the early 20th-century grain silo heritage in their contribution: “The Concrete Silos from the Thirties in Italy as a Grey Agro-Industrial Heritage: a Comparative Analysis of the Outcomes and Impacts of Reuse Tools and Processes Within a Conservation Perspective.”

The "Water Heritage for a Resilient City" workshop has finally begun! The workshop aims to rediscover Milan’s irrigation landscape system in order to preserve the city’s water heritage for agricultural, cultural, social, and environmental purposes.
For too long, Milan’s irrigation system—especially its fontanili (springs)—has been partly forgotten. It’s time to rediscover it together, also as a strategy for adapting to climate change.

OUR GOAL: to build an integrated strategy for the conservation and enhancement of Milan’s irrigation water heritage system.

The workshop was conceived by , with the support of Giorgia Righetto, Andrea L'Erario, and Stefania Landi . It is being held in close collaboration with the AMICI CASCINA LINTERNO - CENTRO CULTURALE Association (Gianni Bianchi) and water expert Renato Galli. Students from all over the world have taken up the challenge to reach this goal!
